Sorry, not camera related...

My daughter is traveling this summer and wants an iPod 30GB. Prices seem to be mostly "fixed" on the web, but I was wondering:

1) If people knew any special deals that could save her some money
2) What you think about having them engraved. Better to prevent theft? What do you put on it...phone number, email, etc.? (She's not particularly fond of the engraving idea, but I think it might make it less desirable to steal?)

Thanks in advance...

I'm a long time Apple guy. Prices are pretty much fixed by Apple. This is good and bad. Good in that you don't have to shop around, bad in that you can't find a better deal.

Look on the Apple Store site. You can find some deals on referbished iPods sometimes. I've bought referbed computers with little or no problems.

Engraving isn't much of a security measure, more of a cosmetic thing, IMO.

Your daughter will love the new iPod. I travel a lot and consider it a required airplane accessory.

I'd doubt that engraving would make the ipod less desirable to steal. I suspect that if people are going to steal, they are going to steal, regardless of a little engraving on the back. It may make it more difficult to sell, though, if she ever wanted to sell it on ebay or anything.

As for getting a deal, I generally read the rss feeds of techdeals.net and slickdeals.net and see what's coming up. Techdeals posted this today:

Overstock has got a refurbished Apple 30GB iPod Video for only $236.94 shipped after automatic discount (add to your cart to see it). Click here for the techdeal and search for "10264847".

Now, overstock.com has awful ratings and I'm not sure you want refurbished but you get the picture. Sometimes Amazon has good deals.

Don't think it would help with security. Anyone stealing is just going to grab and run. They won't inspect it first. Might help if it was lost and fell into the hand of an honest person. Not many of them around anymore though :(

i assume she has her heart set on the ipod and not another possible mp3 player?

i ask because i love my creative zen touch and it has an insane battery life along with a little less likely to be stolen since it is less popular and doesn't have the resell demand.

I did tell her to have a look at the Creative Zens. Glad to hear there's an alternative, especially if good and less money. These things are expensive.

Good points about engraving everyone--perhaps I won't push the issue. I wonder still though if it would help it get "recovered" if she just accidentally left it somewhere. Surely there must be some honest people out there (and wouldn't engraving help that honest person to realize that they could'nt exactly just keep it?)

One last point. If you do go for an iPod and she is travelling, get some black cabled headphones. The standard white ones scream "I've got an iPod".

If you want to make it easier for an honest person to return it if lost, try YellowTag, very cheap, I got a tag free with my camera and it seems a great idea. This I think would be better than engraving, which would make it difficult for your daughter to sell it on in the future.

I would do at least her initials or some very small amount of engraving to make it distinct from say her friend's iPods, etc, plus I think your right about the theft deterent. It may not be a major deterent, but it's something. Also, if she's a student, buy it in her name through the Apple education store. They don't give as big of educational discounts as some companies, but it's still something.

Search DealMac for bargain prices. Note that refurbished iPods (found here) carry the same warranty as a brand new one, BUT they'll have some wear and tear and possibly shorter battery life. iPods listed as "factory refurbished" at Overstock.com, however, only carry a 30 day warranty (maybe they meant Overstock's factory).

Engraving might help if an honest person finds a lost iPod, however the resale value will take a hit as others have noted, and FWIW you'd be providing a way for anyone who sees it to contact your daughter...

I just purchase a 30 G ipod from the Apple store - engraving was included - no extra charge. I had my name put on it...might as well. I've only had it for three or four days, but absolutely love it.

if your daughter is a student she gets a 10% discount from Apple...ipods included.

yep like said before its a pretty much fixed price your not going to find the latest 30gig ipod less than what apple is selling it for.

Like said before if she is a college student or if you know anyone who is you can get it a little cheaper.

I love mine - a long time mac fan here

Amazon sells them for $20 less than Apple, Target often has 10%-off coupons that makes them $30 less than Apple (about the same as the education discount), and Overstock.com has refurbished ones for $65 off if you're willing to deal with Overstock.

I dunno if someone has brought this up already, but make sure you get a Invisible Shield (or something of the same sort) because apple made the ipod with the most scratchable surface possible it seems. And it makes me sad watching The Office on a scratched iPod screen everyday.

i have hidden a number of posts in this thread that pointed users to "free" ipod sites and the like. please take care not to spam in the future. thanks!

Thanks everyone for all the advice, suggestions, and discussion.

She ended up buying the Creative Zen Micro Photo. It was about $100 cheaper than the 30GB ipod, but has only 8GB. But while thicker than the ipod, the smaller size appealed to her. The nano is smaller, but more expensive and at 2 and 4gb at the same price has less bang for the buck.

However, we were a bit surprised to find it didn't have an AC adapter charger included. A USB cable, which can charge it, is included. But if you travel without a computer, as she does, that means a hidden charge of $30 for what CL is charging for the adapter.

I did see some cheaper alternative chargers, the Zip-Linq AC-USB converter which is only $5 rather than $30 for the CL charger. I am a little worried about toasting her new device with a $5 charger. Anyone have suggestions for less expensive (<$30) that are good, reliable, etc.?
