OK, so I bought my new Oly E-500 and love it! I want to get 1 or 2 more CF cards for it but I'm not sure what to get. I like sandisk and have always had no problem with them but when I look down the list of cards and brands I notice that they have different transfer rates (or at least I think that is what it is). If someone could tell me what they use in their cameras and what the difference is between the different transfer rates and is one better than the other, I would be so grateful.

NewEgg has 2gb Transcend CF cards for $47. They're among the fastest CF cards made (with 20Mbps transfer rates), and it's a good brand (unlike Lexar, I've never had a problem with Transcend).
You can get an idea of the different transfer rates here, but this Transcend card is a new 120X model, and your camera will almost certainly be the limiting factor at that speed.

I think a lot of it depends on what you shoot. I see in your portfolio you have some sports photos, and in that case you might be shooting at your cameras 2.5 frames per second. So a faster card will help in that situation. But, if someone shoots one shot at a time doing landscape or still life and takes their time between shots, I wouldn't see the need for the faster card. Just stick with a reputable manufacturer like Sandisk or Lexar. The Sandisk Ultra II would be a good choice at 9MB/sec write speed. They also make the Extreme III that writes at 20MB/sec, but that might be overkill for 2.5 frames/sec, and I'm not sure what the buffer in your camera is rated at.
Edit: or what Scalvert said. That's a good deal!

CFII cards have moving parts (making them much more susceptible to damage) and run at approximately 30X speed. The Transcend card I noted earlier is 120X, has no moving parts, and is proably cheaper than a CFII card anyway. |

//www.newegg.com has decent price on cards - and the prices keep dropping.
Sandisk is a good name, I've got several Kingston cards with no problems. Their Elite Pro is a 40X card, 2Gb for $60ish (free shipping) and the Sandisk Ultra2 is $88 (free shipping) - well, last month's prices.
2Gb is a nice size and is the best bang for the buck right now. Probably hold 400 or 500 lg jpgs.
The ultra 2 are slightly faster than the kingston but i opted to save the $25/card (i got 3 cards so it adds up).
The extra speed is helpful in review of the images and when using a card reader to transfer images to your computer.

In your camera, the SanDisk Ultra II is approximately 40% faster than a Kingston Elite Pro. The Transcend 120x card would be slightly faster than the SanDisk in your camera (and it's $10 cheaper than the Kingston), but it would totally smoke either card in a Firewire reader. The camera is the limiting factor. |

is the transcend card a piece of junk or actually a decent card? I just can't see why it's 1/2 the cost of the Ultra II cards if it's supposedly the same, if not better. Any thoughts?

It's a very reliable, name brand. I've owned them for years. SanDisk is more expensive for the same reason a good Canon lens is more expensive than a equally good Sigma or Tamron. You pay for the name. |
