Today morning, I woke up to find that something is wrong with my camera Canon S1 IS. The autofocus motor was not smooth, and there was also some abnormal sound. I tried to take photographs for the challenge, but they all turned out to be only streaks of light!
(However, I can play the images already available on the card, which show perfectly alright).
Does it mean that the camera sensor is gone? Please help.

Sure is what it sounds like. My old Sony is in the same spot. How many shots on it? How old?

The camera is about 1 year old. Last time, I took photographs with it about 1 week back. That time, it was a night scene (Haridwar, a place of Pilgrimage in India), with lot of illuminations. That time also, I felt streaks of light, and felt that everything is not well with the camera. But, since those photographs came out alright, I was not much concerned. Please help.

Hi Krishan,
This is very common problem with digital cameras, recently( to be precise on 23th of May) one of my friend bought Nikon 70S and 25th he was facing same problem, then we went to Nikon service centre they told us that this manufacturing fault , in that case they told us that autofocus sensor in lens has gone,no remedy for that.Look just go to service centre and show them ,i will advice dont show it to local guy first go to Canon pepole and see what they say

Thanks sanjeev,
I am based at Varanasi, and will go to Delhi next week. Do you know of any Canon Service Centre at Delhi or Calcutta?

No Solace! If anyone could tell me that it may be a little fault, and nothing is wrong with the sensor.
BTW, is it possible to replace sensor, and bring the camera to a condition as it was a new one?

It might be the sensor, or it might be something else. Canon service will have to look at it. If it's about a year old, call them as soon as you can, the work should be covered under warranty.

Unfortunately, I bought the camera from Gray market, because it was 40% cheaper that way!

Call 'em anyway. No harm in asking if they will cover it.

Edit: In today's global marketplace, it is poor practice, IMO, for a company to base a warranty on where a camera was purchased.

Sorry, yesterday i was in Hurry.
In Delhi you can go to Mahatta & Company based in Connaught Place they are official repairer and Distributor for Canon goods. To be honest 80% of cameras in India are from grey market route.Becos price diff is so much if u buy Nikon D70S from grey market it cost u 43K with lens.If u buy same camera from official vendor it cost around 72K,so everybody goes for grey.Anyway when u are coming to delhi get it checked from Mahatta let us see what they tells u.Best of luck ,I hope i am wrong and there is no major fault. This is Mahatta's address

Thanks Sanjiv. I bought the camera from Alfa, Palika. Earlier also, I had bought my Nikon F55 from them, which never gave any problem.
I will show the camera to both Mahatta, and Alfa.
