I plan to retire to a sailboat and travel the world. Assuming my wife does't get seasick and squash the idea.

Whoot! That's some size of a boat... Give us the specifics, will ya? And sail it on down to Cape Cod (Harwich Port) for a visit; I'm only 1/2 mile from the harbor :-)
FWIW, for most of my life I was a serious sailboat racer, and I used to be a sailmaker with North Sails, so I'm officially jealous. I can no longer afford a boat, sad to say. But I'm a hell of a crew if you ever need one :-)

So Bear, when Amanda and I get our charter boat in a couple more years you gonna come down and sail with us (translated to read: give us sailing lessons)?

she's a 32 footer ontario - small blue water cruiser. we've heard of norht sails - hmmmm - ya still got connections there? just kidding!
we got her at a great price, and now just have to learn how to sail her properly. with a toddler!
ooo, yeah, baby - them boots are...men's size 7.
i tried skiing, but managed to shut down an entire ski lift, and decided that was an omen.

we'll stop by on our way down the coast. that won't be until next year, as the man is not canadian, so he needs a passport. next year he'll have canadian citizenship, so will be more mobile...

Congrats. The Ontario 32's are nice and spacious for the size, with what I've always thought to be a nice layout.
Nothing like the freedom of being at sail... sigh. |

I'll be here. When I was much younger, I was a sailing instructor for several summers. If anything's confusing you about "sailing", wing me a message; I might just have the answer. I've spent half my life on the water, sailing or fishing, although I'm now an official "washashore"...

Ontario 323's an exceptionally nice little blue-water cruiser. Her designers, Cuthbertson & Cassian, have an extended track record of excellent designs. You chose well. At 11 feet of beam, she's about as beamy and stable as anything in her class.

Congrats! You're sure to have a ton of fun now!
And oh, major jealousy here! As soon as I'm out of college, I'm buying a sailboat to live on and cruise down to the islands in. I'm mad about sailing, even though I'm totally green at it.
At some point in the next few years, I'm going to build myself a little 13 footer, since the big toys are too expensive just yet ;-)

plus, she has 6'2" headroom, and the man is 6'1". perfect. no ducking. and the sprog seems to like it so far, although we did have him on a dog leash, snapped to his harness, yesterday. he seems to have forgiven us...

Lovely indeed. C&C draw some of the nicest sheer lines in the business, don't they?

yeah. we looked at a couple other c&cs, but this was the best all 'round. needed no work, ready to sail, and under $50,000 canadian, including taxes.
maybe not the one we'll take off around the world on, but a very good start indeed...

Don't mean to hijack Xianart's thread (what I know about sailing I could put in my eye and it wouldn't hurt me, as my Okie dad would say), but Robert, is there anything you haven't done? I'm not being facetious, I'm amazed and impressed. You should write a book, I'd read it.
OK, carry on with the sailing discussion now. Sorry to interrupt. :)
