I'm desparately trying to get out of California. But, I have a great job here, and my wife and kids to support, so I can't just quit and go (which I might do if I were single and had no one else depending on me). But, due to a recent merger and reorganization, another VP in the company has approached me and said that if I would go work for him in his new department, he would let me move to Utah (the company has a building there, though nobody there who does what I do). The pros? Being able to go there, afford a house, live in a nice neighborhood where I might like the schools, etc... Basically all the things I'll never have in Orange County. The cons? Working by myself every day (my boss/coworkers will stay here in CA, and I'll communicate only by phone/email/very sparse traveling), and the possibility that I won't be able to advance in to management, because the company won't likely hire any other junior staff people in Utah just for me. Also, I'd fear that in a few years, if there were another reorganization, they might not have as much use for me as they have now. But that might be outweighed by the fact that my wife and I really, really want to go there (we have lots of family there and nearby, and my wife really wants a bigger house for our kids to have space to grow up). I keep waffling - which is the better choice?

Furthermore, the job is in Salt Lake City / West Valley City. Any of you Utah folks know how bad a commute would be from Tooele to West Valley? Basically, it's about 3 miles south of the airport on Bangerter Highway. I know it's about 30 miles from Tooele, going on I-80, but is traffic bad right now? Houses out there just seem so darn cheap to me (since what goes for $150k there would be $850k here).

I guess this is mostly commentary / venting, but advice would be appreciated.

From Tooele to West Valley wouldn't be bad at all. On I-80 you would fly into work with little to no traffic every day. Plus you'd be right buy a few fellow DPC'ers!

If you are into motor sports, Larry Miller has completed his new race track so that would provide you some AWESOME photo ops. I know I'll be out there a few times this year!

Also take a look at a few profiles there are quite a few of us on DPC from Utah.

You're probably looking at a 45 minute commute or less on a typical high traffic day. Tooele is really booming right now. I wish I would have bought property five years ago when it was dirt cheap.

Hi, Steve.

I work in a school in West Valley City, not too far from where you'd be. One of my teachers lives in Tooele and does the commute on a daily basis, and has done for over 20 years. She has no complaints.

The quality of life is good, and I believe the schools are terrific. It's a great place to raise a family. Tooele homes are a great bargain, even more so than the SL area.

As for your decision to move or not, basically you're asking, career or quality of life. Take a look at your signature - you'll know what to do.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. My new boss is trying to work out the budget details for me to come work for him even as we speak, then I'll be moving to UT in about 90 days or so, if it all works out.

We've talked about Tooele - anyone have any opinions about Magna, UT? It's awfully close to West Valley, but I really don't know anything about it at all. Mostly old stuff? Some new construction? Nice place? Bad place? Anything?

My wife grew up in Magna, like most would agree there's nice spots and bad spots in just about every town in SLC. There is a lot of new construction throughout the entire valley, you shouldn't have a problem finding a place. I also know a great real estate agent, if you would like his number just send me a PM and I'll shoot it on over to you.

Let me know if there is anything I can help you with, more than happy to lend a hand in anyway I can.

Best of luck, we have three of our kids living in SLC with parents just south in Utah county. I kinda laugh when I hear you say houses are cheap. I now live in San Antonio Texas where a $200,000 home here would cost $400,000 anywhere in Utah. I guess coming from California it's even more expensive as you said. Best of luck and hope the mountains don't fall in on ya. When my Grandmother came to visit us from California when I was a kids she was soooo woriied that all the tall mountains would fall into the valleys and kill her ;)

Wow Tooele, the edge of nowhere ... well Grantsville is really the edge. You'll enjoy it ... so what was it that David O McKay said in English?
