Well, I did it. I got an official job offer, and this morning, I graciously accepted it. I live in California now, and I'll be moving to Utah for this job.

Questions: I'm planning on shopping and buying a house before I move out there. I'd hate to have to move twice, especially since we've already picked out the neighborhood we want to live in. But, of course, that means that timelines are very tight. I need to get an offer out on a house quickly, get my loan approved, do all that fun stuff, and get moved in there, all in a matter of 6 weeks or so. Has anyone ever done this? What's the fastest you've ever done the home-buying process, from offer to taking posession?

It's all very scary, since we're also first-time home buyers, but exciting, too!

My suggestion to you would be to find a mortgage lender in that area and get pre-approved for a loan amount before you start looking. After that, things go pretty smoothly. Posession times vary depending on the buyer and seller. .

I totally understand that you don't want to move twice, but there is a good chance that you'll make a hasty decision that you'll later regret.

Yes it is a big nuisance, but if you rent first, you can take your time buying a house you truly like. It WILL be worth the extra effort.

Have you considered buying a used RV and living in it until you find a home? That's we have done.

Quality RVs can be found inexpensively and easily resold.

I would also add to the advice of getting pre-approved that you should not do anything to mess up your credit before the closing since often your credit report is re-run just before you sign. That means that making large purchases (appliances, furniture, etc.) could break the deal....so wait until the papers are signed to furnish your new home.

I'm relocating and renting first since I don't know the area well enough to make a good decision from this distance. Laws may be different there... Building ordinances and codes may be undesirable in certain towns...all those things. Nothing like thinking the back yard would be perfect for a workshop studio, pool or addition only to own the house and find out that local regulations won't allow it. Call me chicken, but I'd rather wait a year or so than be sorry I rushed into something.
