I have been trying to upload a video (slideshow made with Photostory3), but my computer (Win XP) keeps freezing.

Here is what happens:
⢠I open google video upload page
⢠Click on âBrowseâ
⢠Select file and click on âOpenâ
That is the point where it all stops responding. I donât even get as far as the upload button.

This is what I have tried so far to solve the problem:
⢠Firefox vs Internet Explorer
⢠Using a different video sharing site
⢠Using different video formats (avi, wmv, mpg)
⢠Turned off Antivirus, Ad-watch and firewall
⢠Rebooted the computer
⢠Closed all other programs

⢠There is NO Nortonâs Internet Security
* the file size is only 8.5MB
* I CAN upload to my photosite account, and to my website via frontpage.

Edited to add other things I now tried:
* deleted cookies + cache, restarted browswer

Any ideas, please?

Just a thought, but delete your cache and cookies, restart the browser and try again.

Can you upload to where ever you are going using FTP instead?

If I knew how to do that, I'd try.
However, I doubt it could be done, anyway ..... this is a limited format type deal, meant to be foolproof, I think.

The one I really want is only 8.5 MB, others (of different formats) were about 50ish.

I reread better and saw that you didn't even get as far as the upload button so file size shouldn't really matter.

Have you tried uploading other things? Like, uploading a photo to DPC or something? Does that work?

Yes, I can upload to my photosite account, as well as my little website (via frontpage).

However, I just found that I can NOT upload to DPC - it works on the same principle as the video sites and freezes my computer, too.
DANG IT!!!

Didn't see it mentioned: Are you using the Google Video Uploader? or a link on Google?

I tried both.

Looking around the Google Video Site:

Per their troubleshooting page...

Use as simple as possible filenames (no spaces or weird characters)... I'd tend to agree with that one as we really can't tell what kind of system they got on the back end... looking around it seems to be a bit fussy.

The other thing they mention is make sure that the file being uploaded is on the main hard disk and not an external drive. I'm not so sure why this would make a difference...but would try it anyways.

Yes, it is on C drive, good file names, too (at least two of them were). Seems the problem has nothing to do with google, since I found out that I can't upload to DPC anymore, either.
I am currently running a thorough virus scan.

I think Google just f*ed your browser...

they both may share the same module for file uploading.

if you can remember when your computer was last known to be working fine, may I suggest you perform a system roll-back (system restore in windows XP).
06/05/2006 11:12:56 PM · #20
Ok...... I have never done that, but it makes sense. I'm waiting for the scan first, but I will very much keep that one in mind, thanks.

Before doing too much...try reseting IE to it's defaults.

Open IE
Tools > Internet Options...
Click the Advanced tab

There will be a Reset Browser (or Internet Settings Can't remember what it is in IE6 as I've been using IE7 for a while now) anyways click that button when it asks to reset homepage say click no and try uploading again.

How both Firefox and IE both broke seems weird. Both use the same lowlevel I/O calls but there is a bunch of different ways to code to use those calls.

It makes sense if you realize that Beetle installed a Google program which may have changed the "file upload" on all browsers to call for a different DLL for uploading files. This is what I suspect, so if uninstallation of that Google code cant be uninstalled, a system restore is the next best step.

The plot thickens.. after resetting the IE defaults, the video did upload at last !!!! Afterwards, nothing much worked anymore LOL
A few more times of resetting defaults eventually seemed to work - THANK YOU!

The most interesting part is that resetting IE also fixed Firefox!

I do NOT understand this, but hey.... I think I'm back in business.

Thanks everybody for helping. Does that mean the Google video place is evil? I usually like all the google stuff :-(

glad you got it working. Computer problems are pain.

not an answer to your question, but eventhough G0ogle is buying over some programmers from micros0ft, many of the good ones are still being pampered and overpaid in micros0ft. :p
