Ive been trying to teach myself some PS basics over the last few weeks. Im actually pretty new to it, and feel a little bit overwhelmed at the moment. Anybody have any good advice on things to focus on? I do have some of the basics down, but I want to understand using layers/masks better. Are there any websites or books anybody could recomend? Thanks a bunch! :D

Either this book or this one are great choices. I strongly recommend picking one of them up. They will speed up your learning curve tremendously.

Also, look at the tutorials here. Head over to Adobe's website and they have pretty nice stuff also. And most important, carefully read the help in Photoshop, and you'll learn a lot of basics.

Radiant Vista has a bunch of really cool tutorials, in video and pdf format - and free! An excellent video tutorial on adjustment layers on this page.

Bear_Music's Landscape Thread has a lot in it about contrast masking using layers, as well as some other useful tips for post-processing. While the main thrust is landscapes, most can be applied to other areas of photography too. Long read, but well worth it.
