Hey all, i'm almost ready to get an SLR, and i've decided on a Canon 350D (aka digital rebel xt).
Just wondeing what your thoughts are on buying from airports? Do they come with an international warranty? If they do, would that be the same as buying a camera locally with warranty?
Second, i was just wondering what the price of a 350d is duty free at an airport. Is there any way of finding out? I was wondering whether it'd be cheaper to buy from ebay (btw, i'm Autralian :P), from a seller who offers local warranty.
Thanks :)
woudl especially love to hear feedback from people who bought their cameras overseas... |

| Why don't you go to George's Camera store (or similar) - to their Duty Free section - and ask? You might be able to buy there before going overseas. These days, you might even be able to use it before leaving. |

I have bought a lot of equipment off ebay....cameras included. I haven't bought anything from airports though.
I would recommend ensuring that you get your camera and/or equipment from an australian seller to ensure your warranty is covered. Although as my accountant said...if you cannot guarantee that you are going to get $1000 worth of warranty repairs done than why spend the extra $1000 by buying within Australian.
Realistically it is a decision you are going to have to make for yourself. Nobody can decide it for you. Buying overseas is a risk...is it worth it...you know the answer.

Very few camera manufactures have truly international warrenties. If you are at a US airport- I can almost PROMISE they do not. Do not listen to the employee, actually check the papers IN THE BOX before you walk out the door.
If the warrenty says international, go for it. :) |

I bought my 300D at the airport on the way to holiday, so I purchased it from a UK chain within the UK (sort of, through passport control, but you get the idea) and therefore got a warranty that covered me. It was not a massive amount cheaper than high street prices at the time.

I've always found airports to be quite expensive, you can usually get a better deal at any number of shops even with paying the GST.
Then, if you are going overseas you can get the GST refunded at the airport and end up with a even better deal. have a look at Tourist Refund Scheme for more information. I've used it several times and it's the cheapest way to buy camera gear in Australia. If you buy on eBay from an australian supplier (so it's really cheap anyway) and they supply a tax invoice, then you can get much better deal than anything at the airport shops. |

I asked exactly the same question in this thread - quite a few australian stores I hadn't heard of before
But I just got a SB-800 from B&H in the USA - and it was a lot cheaper than anywhere in Australia, even with the shipping it was cheaper than buying a Hong Kong import on eBay. But importing is only worth it if you pay under AU$500 - if the declared value is over $500 then customs will pull it up and make you pay GST.
If I was going overseas in the next month I would be looking on eBay and trying to find an australian dealer who will give you a warranty and an real invoice |
