Valid comment, Lisae.

But, if you work in the media, as I do, and then you love to read newspapers (3 or more a day for a balanced perspective), as I do, and you have the radio blasting all day long, as I do, it is very hard to escape it or avoid it.

As well, I thoroughly enjoy this DPC site, but feel that it is being shifted too far from its core purpose due to the excessively high emotions pertaining to the world's condition.

Funny, yet sad enough, we have a far greater panic here in Toronto with the outbreak of SARS. Some folks are not leaving their homes, eating in restaurants, taking the subway, going shopping, and generally vanishing from the public venues.

So far, two hospitals are completely closed, all hospital volunteers and visitors are banned from all local hospitals and life is running in a strange direction.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is forcing Toronto to scan all travelers at the airport, taxis do not want to pick up "some" passengers, a few schools have sent home all Chinese-descent students, Emergency Medical Services and police personnel are being quarantined by the hundreds, many hundreds more of doctors and nurses are quarantined too, and generally, panic is consuming the city.

So, reading novels and walking the dogs alone in the rain may be our only escape these days. Scary enough, right?

Point? Panic, extremism, and polarized viewpoints are ruling the day. Balance is what we all need right now. Perhaps, a few more positive diversions - like photography. What do you think now?

I understand. But for some of us, talking is a lot better than keeping it all in. I'm a media junky too... I watch more news on TV than anything else. If I kept it all in I would go mad, I swear!

This particular thread doesn't interest me, because I'm not anti-American and I think there are many, many things Americans should be proud of. I don't think anyone should feel ashamed of where they were born or the culture they grew up in. Politics, though, is another matter and I think it thrives on discussion. It comforts me to see open and frank discussions and arguments about important matters.

Yes, it can go too far. But this is a strange time. Some people will need distraction, and that's fine. Other people need to fight it out, and that's fine. I find that whenever I pick up my camera right now, I have no inspiration at all. Nothing seems beautiful to me. It all seems surreal when people are dying and bombs are being dropped elsewhere in the world.

Lisa, I enjoy your photographic work. And, after reading your comments, it sounds like you may need a break from all of this surreal world too, just like me.

Maybe. You may want to follow this sage advise "...but photography is something that helps me to keep finding new ways to look at the world." It sound rather real when I read it, and it may help ground your own thinking, and perhaps, help someone else too, who may view your contributions and connect to them? Who knows? Michael

Some of us do need to write/talk about it -- I had trouble sleeping for days, until I wrote the essay posted in the Freedom Fries thread about my own encounter with "shock and awe" last week.

Thanks Michael! Perhaps you're right. I'll make some time to take some photos tomorrow :).
