I realize that this may seem like a somewhat stupid question, but I am very new to DPC and really, to serious digital photography altogether. So, my question is this: in a basic editing challenge, can I change the color of just a select object? Say I take a picture of a pink flower but want to change it to pink... is that "illegal"?

Yes, it's illegal. You can't do any spot editing which means you can't select any portion of your photo to change something. All changes must be done to the entire image.

Things like selective color and selective desaturation can be done legally using the sliders and you can sometimes get the same effect without spot editing.

Ok, thanks. Now, it is legal in advanced editing challenges, correct?

Yup.
