Hey guys, quick question.
My friend has a Canon 420EX speedlite. Will it work on my Nikon D50?
Thanks

Although I'm not sure....I would say if it did "fire" all else would not work....remember...these new cams "talk" to the flash all the time and Canon and Nikon may speak different languages!....but...I may be wrong!

Hotshoe is different so no, unless there's some sort of adapter available.

for a flash to work you need the rails (ground) and the center pin - the fire pin.
so it might work in some manual or auto mode, but it won't work in eTTL/ iTTL mode.

the only flashes i know that can be used between brands are Metz and Quantum. You buy the flash and then a module for the specific brand of camera. On a metz the 'shoe' as they call it is about $75.

Hi-ho,

The 430EX will fire in manual mode, but you'll have no metering, as the Canon flashes do not have a non-ttl 'auto' mode.

I suppose you could set the power manually and chip the results if you were shooting still life, but for anything that changes or moves it'd be a bit like too much effort...

As an aside, some of the Nikon flashes do have a non-ttl 'Auto' mode which will allow them to work on Canon SLR's if you use apeture priority or manual and stick below the Xsync speed, but that's not what you asked. (I've used a borrowed SB800 on my 20D, and regulgarly used to use an older SB24 on my 20D and Powershot G5).

Cheers, Me.

Yup, put the SB-28 in 'A' mode, set the flash to the same Zoom, ISO and apeture as your camera (in Av or M mode) and fire away.. Should work fine and dandy..

There's a bit more fiddling than a dedicated flash, but you can still get good results with auto flashes. Just remember that the wee sensor on the front of the flash can't be blocked, or you'll get very overexposed shots...

Cheers, Me.
