Well, after much consideration, I think I may be leaving (or at least not being a member of) DPC. I love this community and everything, great people, amazing photographers, it's good. However, I find that sometimes I LIKE the imperfections in photography. I like blown highlights and overexposure (things i'm always slaughtered for). I find my photography isn't so much "technically perfect" but artistic, and I am killed in the challenges for it, or I don't enter for fear that it will be.
I still don't know, I am however now signed up with DeviantART, which seems better for me.
I think I will probably end up staying with the site, just not paying, and do the occasional challenge (not that I ever did that many to begin with) and maybe when I'm older if I go for more technically perfect shots, then come back?
Hmm.. I dunnno.
What a lovely rant. |

Yeah, but I'm 15, and broke.
Plus, DPC is a place to grow and improve your shots, get feedback. However, I don't necessarily want to grow, I like my pictures, even if they aren't necessarily perfect.
Eh. I don't know. |

You know, I've always thought that first and foremost that the art an artist produces should be for the artist. Whatever you decide to do, take photographs for yourself first.

Hmmmm maybe you should quit photography altogether then.
I am not trying to be mean but if you ever think there is no more room for improvement then I think you should quit. You are perfect so what more is there? I think the little $25 is minor even if you are only 15. $25 is only about $2.00 a month or about .07 a day. That is nothing IMO for what you get back in return.

I think you should skip two movies, sign up for DPC and join Team Suck. We share your ideals.

Nooo.
I am FAR from it, trust me, I know.
I am saying I am happy with where I am now, and am taking pictures for ME, not to please others.
I didn't mean I didn't want to grow EVER, I just want to take pictures for me, and grow into my own style, and such.
I like feedback, or else I wouldn't post any pictures. The thing is, here pictures are (while artistic) technically perfect, for the most part, and that is something I'm not aiming for now. |

Mostly, they glory in their suckiness, as defined by the DPC masses that vote on their images. Secretly, the all think they're way cool :-)

um... well... for a while we were tormenting WPL but they were way too sporting about it. So now we're giving away Team Suck Awards for photos with merit that might not have scored well, and also to acknowledge commentors.
And I post interviews of our members (more will be out soon!)...
And maybe we'll compete against each other or compete against other non-WPL teams (except that there aren't any... I was hoping Art ROFLMAO would start Team Spew). The winner of our only competition so far is chaimelle, who now boasts the title Queen of Suck.

if nothing else two hundred people get to see your art every week. that is worthe the money alone.
sure they may give you bad scores and it made you mad but maybe 5 people liked it and those are 5 people that may have never seen your art. if you love your art share it with as many people as you can, even if it means a few bad scores. |

actually, many of our members suffer from Excessive Self-Deprecation Syndrome (ESDS).
We're not cool, we're zen. Just like the Fonz.

On a more philosophical/pedagogical note, in any form of art whatsoever it's always a good idea to learn the conventional skills/techniques/rules by heart. These are the foundation you build on when you set forth to pursue your own vision. And where's a better place on the 'net to learn these things, than right here?
More succinctly, how can you break the "rules" if you don't even know them? You may "like" the blown-out sky in this particular image, but in another image you may wish it was not blown out, and it's good for this reason that you know how to avoid it, so when you DO use a blown-out sky, it's completely intentional.

Come on, don't leave. So what your photos are over exposed? Many people here submit perfect photos and then get a bunch of 1s and end up in 30th place ;-) Shit happens. It's only $25. Stay please. And don't take the comments too seriously. People just wanna help. They all mean well. Sometimes a person might say 'your photos suck' instead of 'highlights blown'. In their unique way they just mean your photo is over-exposed ;-) |

Thank you everyone.
Sorry to any I offended, or if I came off like I think I am perfect.
That wasn't my intent at all.
I do appreciate this site, and feedback, and everything posted above.
I think this July I will go ahead and renew my membership.
You all made good points.
Thanks :) |

only rex said that. and he's on Team Suck, so don't trust him!
I only had one photography teacher, and she said the goal is to take a perfectly exposed picture in the camera because from there you can do anything you want with it. In other words, you can make a blown-out sky from a well-exposed sky, but not vice versa! For some reason, that statement has haunted me ever since, and seems to apply to every aspect of my life.
The scoring system at DPC is not going to reward you as you strive to create your own look (aka vision), but you might find yourself able to cultivate favorites and good comments. That's my current goal (also miserably underfulfilled at the moment).

"False modesty is the last refuge of the incompetent."
I shoot (and submit) whatever I want, and don't worry about the score. A couple of comments from people who -- to use the earlier example -- appreciate why I included a "blown-out sky" usually makes it a worthwhile exercise for me. |

You probably know this, but I can't resist calling you up on it, since we haven't one-upped each other lately:
In Isaac Asimov's "Foundation" trilogy, the great Salvor Hardin says "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."
And this, incidentally, is a spin-off of Samuel Johnson's "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel."

and a very good statement it is too. that's what i was taught in high school art and art college. and it's what i taught my studnets when an art teacher.
and team suck is fab, man! we can commiserate about being misunderstood, and improve our shots too...

I knew that, but I forgot about it in Foundation -- way too long since I read any of those.
Sad how much currency the original retains ... : ( |
