I'm on the lookout for a 105 mm macro lens (for Nikon D70) and I was wondering which is best either Sigma or Nikon, to get the manual focus or automatic focus, and what are the pros and cons of each?
Ideally I would like to get the Nikon brand but have to think of costs unless I get lucky with the lottery!
Thanks! |

Well.... I'm not a Nikonian, but will answer the question as a dSLR user. Auto-focus! What if your eyesight is off? What if your "shot of a lifetime" is faster than you can turn a focus ring? What if? What if?
My theory. Buy the best glass you can! If you don't have enough money for the good glass, save longer! There is no subsitute.

Now there is a good point! What if I was taking a picture of something thru glass, wouldn't it try to focus on the glass instead of the object? Maybe I'd need a filter perhaps? |

Again, dunno about Nikons, but canon lenses all have a switch you can flip to Manual Focus any time you HAVE to... rest of time, let auto get it, set your focus point via camera and let technology do the work. Good glass does it very well.

With the Sigma 105mm Macro, you can just switch from manual to AF. I almost do all my macro work in manual. Allows for more freedom of DOF and angles. But that is me. Get the lens though. Best lens I own, not for long, but currently is. You won't ever regret it period. i have a little game I play. it is called, "use the Sigma, and get above a 6.00"....Hasn't failed me yet.
So, get the Sigma and use manual or AF, but the lens allows for both.

The main reason I got a dslr is for the manual focusing.

The 105mm lens isn't only good for macro... AF comes in handy in a lot of situations... Macro is usually MF, and can be a serious PITB if you leave AF on, but pull the lens away and start doing some other stuff that is more suited to a 160mm f/2.8 lens and you might want AF. |
