So I travel quite a bit and the trips are getting longer and longer. Now that I am shooting in raw I can easily fill many cards on a 3 wk trip. Do any of you have any experience with external storage devices. I usually travel wihout my lap top so the storage device will have to work independently.

I buy nothing but LaCie anymore. I've owned and still own numerous LaCie drives without so much as one complaint. My recommendation would be a triple interface drive.

Zeuszen, do all their products require a pc itnerface. I dont usually take a pc with me.

I'm in the market for one of these myself, but I'm undecided about image review. It would be nice to have, but I shoot RAW (which some support, I question the speed) and it also doubles the price.

The one good thing about most of these is that you can upgrade the HD yourself if need be.

What interface/connectivity would you need? (I use FW exclusively, and even when travelling((or at least when I arrive)) need some sort of computer)...

He's probably looking for something that can take SD/CF cards straight into the device for dumping. None of the LaCie devices seem to have this.

Thanks Glen that was exactly my concern.

For the record, my recommendation is the Epson P-2000 or 4000. Solid, solid devices that take both cards *and* can preview RAW, and have a 3.8" screen that is utterly fantastic.

Pricey though

Yes, Glen I was just on the web site. Big cash outlay but the reivews are phenominal. I also just read about the P-4500 just released but it is the cost of a lap top computer.....

Ah, yes. Thanks. Best to ignore my previous posts. Ellamay appears to be mostly happy with her little Epson 2000. She may just chime in...

I have and mostly love the epson p2000, it is a 40 gig HD I travel lots too and it is FAST when you are in the fireld, (way more so than my laptop) The only thing I do not like about it is as a make user I find the 'pc type'
file labeling almost impossible to dicipher. I only struggle when trying to import the photos from the epson onto my computer, other than that it is phenomenal!
p.s. I actually own 2 i like them so much

The more I read the more I think I may go the epson route. p-2000. Maybe the price on te p 4000 will drop now that the p 4500 is out.

Picked up a Hyperdrive to use on my recent trip to Japan and was quite happy with it. If you have an unused 2.5" laptop harddrive you can simply slide it in. The best part about it, is that it is extremely fast to copy over a card. Uses AA batteries too so I didn't have to bring an extra battery charger.Edit- Device doesn't have a viewing screen :(

I also own the Archos 420, although it has a huge screen it only has about 18GB of free space. No RAW viewer :( , since I mainly shoot in RAW now and not enough for a 1 1/2 week vacation. I used it has a backup and mp3 player on the trip as I like to shoot while listening to music.

My buddy brought his Smartdisk - Flashtrax and interestingly enough you can view RAW files from it. The only thing about the device is that is is pretty big and it might be only of those things to leave in the hotel and upload all your cards to it at the end of the day.

i love my ImageTank III the battery is nearly dead through 2.5yrs of use, but i have a backup battery for when it does die when copying..

40GB and it keeps the original file names from the Camera.. it also makes a new folder for each time u copy a card
