Thanks BeeCee and Heather - so it doesn't have to be the same thing, but more of a "reshoot" of the original, eh? Example, if I were to use a different model with the same pose? or, the same items with an entirely different angle? those are ok?

BeeCee - talk about recycling! lol

i have challenge entries which are bad because of the subject. Are we to retake the challenge shot based on the original challenge description or retake the shot of the same bad subject?
05/30/2006 02:08:57 AM · #29
Well, it did say something about "based on the comments", so I'd say keeping the photo basically the same. For example, if it was still life and last time you shot a bowl of fruit on a lace tablecloth, this time you wouldn't do a collection of coathangers on showercurtain. But you could use a different bowl, change background colour, that sort of thing, as comments and your increased skills suggest.

NOTE, this IS just my interpretation. Anyone who knows anything is free to correct me! :)

this is a good challenge, would be better if we chould somehow see the origional entry and then vote on the improvment made, because mode images are made with-in the challenge guidelines so for instance i decide to reshoot my single light source i would re-shoot with a single light source, what is to stop people saying would have used a light coming from here and here and scoring me down?

You can see the original. Mind you, that means digging through 500+ challenges. ;)

It might be a good idea to name which challenge it was for in the title? Some shots might not make a lot of sense strictly photographically, but would when the confines of the particular challenge were known. (I'm thinking about my own choice, here. )

Great thing about this is that you can reshoot a basic editing challenge entry with advanced editing.

"Pick one of your own (non-ribbon winning) past entries and improve upon it based on the comments you received."

Time to dig through my comments and see if I've received the grail: "This is such a horrible horrible photo and subject, you should have shot something entirely different." :)

CRAZY!! -someone was reading my MIND!!!

I was just thinking yesterday that they should have this challenge - I swear .... because i have 2 4th-place finishes and I was thinking that I wanted to to redo ... so I could place 141st :] .... ! :P

I for one am NOT going to name the challenge in the title and probably not going to use the same title either, the thing I like about the challenges is the anonymity so I am going to try and recreate one of my least viewed entries :)

Wonder if we can use the implied "you should have shot something entirely different"... :-)

It certainly would be nice if we could provide a link to our original picture with our submission. Sure, the voter would know who submitted the picture, but that would allow them the opportunity to view the comments and determine if the photographer used them to make improvements.

Then I also wonder, is it better to tweak a good picture or take a loser (I have plenty) and make a lot of changes? I suspect voters will just go for what is submitted since they currently have no way of knowing what the original is unless the recognize it or search past entries.

I will be taking a loser and making pretty significant changes, myself.

What if the comments are contradictory and not crituqal? How do you decied how to imprve the image?

Well, this is a challenge Im passing by.

Two thoughts:

1. So much for anonymity
2. Limiting the entries to non-ribboning shots will seriously restrict Kiwiness' options.

Well, he can convert one of the very few images without a ribbon in a ribbon winner. I'm not sure it's good for the rest of us...LOL.

I would encourage you to enter. take what some people have said and what you have learned since and try again. one thing that I think may help many scores is less DNMC since most voters won't know what challenge the photo was originally for it will be judged for its photgraphic merit. for instance your barrier shot I liked but I think you got alot of bad votes for it not having red and green but now it would most likely be voted on as just a photo.

Am I completly wrong in this thinking?

THIS IS AN OPEN FREE-STUDY!!!

there are NO posted special rules related to how to reshoot your own image. the challenge description should help guide the voters, but straying from the description is NOT a dq'able offense.

maybe 1 or 2 voters will have enough time to go through all the entries and try to find the original. as for the rest of the voters, they'll be judging the photos on their own.

so, have at it. use one of your earlier images as a starting point, but don't worry about anything else except the quality of your image and it's wow factor...

;-)

However, it is in the special rules section, so it would no longer be 'straying from the descritpion', it would be violating the rules if you did not 'reshoot one of your own entries'. I would think that if it appeared as though you did not attempt to reshoot one of your own past entries, it would be DQ, and I would vote as such. I predict some after the challenge DQs on this one for this reason.
