You may need a blue shirt to enter the challenge, but you're certainly welcome in discussions without one :D |

Thanks. :-)
I think sometimes I feel like I'm intruding in threads that have nothing to do with member challenges. (Like - do I actually have anything of value to say?) But really I am just being silly (not to mention jealous of that pretty blue!!) :-) |

I just got my purdy shirt thanks to the wonderful generosity of a fellow member and am still getting used to wearing it, so I totally understand what you're saying. Hell, I still wonder if I belong in these threads too cuz it really doesn't feel much different wearing blue, and I don't know much more than I did a couple weeks ago as a greyshirt :D
(btw, kls, looks like we've been here the same length of time :) )

You can fix that by becoming a paid member

Obviously, but unfortunately first I have to fix the problem of being unemployed.

Just saw this challenge and thread and felt a little deflated as the only empty room around here is in my head and I am not sure I know how to get a camera in there!
On the other hand, I like this idea of a tribute to Edward Hopper. I saw his painting on this very subject a while back at the Tate Modern in London and, like all of his work, made me stop and stare, feeling amazed by it all. Sometimes I wonder if Hopper painted koans...
Carl
Edit PS after reading the thread: Gee, guys, this is one where some "out of the box thinking" should really help. It may not get you any good scores but, what the heck, go with what is in your heart.

"Take one thing and your camera into an empty room and photograph it."
This is obvious to me - the one thing has to be a mirror or a second camera. You are supposed to take a picture of your camera in an empty room. The other thing must either be a mirror to shoot your camera with or another camera!
:) |

right... because one thing and then one camera would be two things, so really no mirror and no other camera, just your camera in the empty room, and all the DNMC nazis would hammer your pic, when really you are the one who did meet challenge and they did not...?! |

I'm surprised so many people are mad about this challenge. I'm in already. my already bad back is probably not happy about it but I emptied the largest and most filled room in the house. i moved a couch, desk, computer, recliner, massage chair, coffee table, Elliptical machine,Gazelle, aquarium. etc. all by myself while my husband was at work. it didnt take as long as you all may think. and the plus side is everything is really clean now(under the couch, and coffee table. etc, areas i dont always normally reach). It's doable. Dont be so discouraged guys! Cheer up! I'm personally probably better off without all the competition but its sucks to see all you guys all so put off by this one. ;) |

I'm going to paint one wall in a mirror finish. Then take a photo of my camera in the reflection. Except then I'm in the room, and thats two things...
Drat foiled again ;-) |

Originally posted by DrAchoo: Well, if I were not going to be vying for 3rd in the LoD, I would steer wide and clear of this challenge. Not every challenge topic can be a winner, I guess, but this one has disaster written all over it. A few thoughts:
1) Not everybody has an empty room. Decreases participation.
2) Not everybody has a wide enough lens. Decreases participation.
3) We are going to see 95% of the challenge be creatively challenged shots which all look the same. We will have 5% of the challenge be worth looking at.
4) DNMC is going to have a field day with letter of the law as well as intent. Empty corner? Close up? What about any artificial lighting? Does that count as a thing? (i.e. what about "things" behind the camera.
5) The winners will still be excellent shots. I haven't seen a challenge yet which didn't have at least 3 quality entries.
I will go on record here on Monday predicting 146 entries with roughly 12 shots above 6.0 (norm would be 25). I will also be the first to retract all this if DPC proves me wrong (they have before). Yes, my entry will be in there. With the way it's been going the last 5 challenges, it will be among the 95% that are creatively uninspired. |
Originally posted by fotoman_forever: The more I read that challenge description, the more I think it royally sucks.

It's really a big downer to me when I see things like these posted right away in the forums. Most of us are just beginning to come up with ideas for an entry but you guys have already passed judgement that 95% won't meet your standard for creativity, or that it sucks. Thanks a lot Doc and fotoman.
I believe that the challenge suggestion was made in good faith as a topic that would challenge our abilities as photographers. Sometimes the challenge details include words like "be creative" or "capture as creativly as you can ...". Not so this time. Some of us are much better than others at what passes for creativity here at dpc. The others may be better than the "creativeists" at meeting the challenge when it calls for something specific like Empty Room does.
Originally posted by yanko: To be serious for a moment since this challenge is so exclusive to only people with empty rooms (I know of nobody that has one including myself) we might as well have that age restricted challenge, Icelandic only challenge, etc.
|
Aren't the people who are saying they can't find something to shoot for this challenge the ones who are being closed-minded? They aren't giving it much of a try if they are giving up on the first day. No where does it say that the empty room has to be in your house, or even in a house. Expand your horizons a bit.
I think kenskid what right. This is an easy challenge to meet. But that's assuming you try. And it is specific enough that no one should complain if people say an entry is DNMC.

That's the spirit! (but how do you have a gazelle? - you don't live in Africa, so it must be an exotic pet.)
The room I plan to use isn't in my house. I'll be able to check it out tomorrow... |

I can't believe people are pissed off about this challenge!
Honestly, what's the matter with everyone?
I think it would be impossible to come up with a challenge every week that would please everybody.
There's just no way that could happen.
It's a "challenge"-you've been "challenged" to do something.
OK, so you can't do it, why can't you just move on and wait for the next challenge instead of spreading the negativity around this place?
Secondly, why are people complaining about not having an empty room?
Every room has the potential to be empty.
Just make an effort people.
Moan and bitch moan and bitch....

C'mon people, use your imaginations! Think outside the box! Find a photo of an empty room on the internet, put it on your monitor, stick a glass in front of it and you've got your entry! |

I think it is very easy to meet this challenge.
Step 1: Empty a room.
Step 2: Throw stuffed animal (or whatever) on floor.
Step 3: Take picture.
Step 4: Put stuff back.
See how easy it is? The point here is that we can meet the challenge easily with a bit of effort. The tricky part is actually taking a picture that is interesting... |

Or you can have a wonderfull wife that does all the work for you, so when you come home from work you have a big empty room so all you have to do is find a few interesting things, put them on the floor (one at a time) and voila you have 3 or 4 shots to choose from. thanks Jaded:)
by the way I hate that gazelle. anyone want to come pick it up? |

Don't worry Bro, Rikki was way ahead of you...
Coolhar, just because a Challenge is possible, doesn't make it good. The superspecific challenges make for a very tight cluster of ideas. When you vote on more than 100 entries, they start to all look the same. The added problem is the DNMC crowd will psychologically limit the creativity even more because people will want to comply with the rules, but won't know how creative they can get.
