Whenever I take a picture (8 megapixel) in RAW format and open with CS' raw converter it says it is in 8 bit...should i switch it to 16 bit? Is there a big difference? Pro's vs. cons here?

Also, is my cam supposed to be shooting in 16 bit and is changing it with the raw converter going to reduce quality? I'm lost.

I do the initial Raw conversion in 16bit and it does improve quality during PP, although it does consume more system resources.

Your camera produces a 12 bit RAW file, so converting in 8bit throws away 4 bits of info per pixel. Might as well take advantage of that additional 4 bits and do the conversion to 16 bit.

In CS some tools won't be available to use, but not enough of them to merit going 8-bit.

I agree with Leroy, and use 16-bit for all of the initial processing. By the time I run into anything that doesn't work in 16-bit I have usually converted from RAW, adjusted color and tone and made many of the adjustments I do.

Most of what isn't allowed in 16-bit are filters and they are applied toward the middle to end of the workflow.
