why not?

anyone know of a side by side of the xt vs the 30d. I have been searching and can't find one.

drake.

The 30d's nice, but the 30d is to the 20d what the d70s is to the d70...it's not even that much of an upgrade.

The d200 is a whole nother beast.

goto DPreview.com and click buying guide side by side then choose your camera

here

This is what made me give the XT to my wife and buy the 30D for myself

gotcha. found the side by side
05/29/2006 04:51:44 PM · #32
lol. when you do the side by side of the xt and the 30d, doesn't look THAT much different.

Tamron 28-75mm and Canon 70-200mm do the job for me. Whether you want the f/4L or the f/2.8L is a personal choice, depending on finances and what/how you shoot. The 70-200mm f/4L is a hell of a sharp lens, world-class, and quite a bit lighter and less expensive than the f/2.8 version, which can be had, incidentally, IS or non-IS.

The megapixels are almost meaningless on this size of a sensor. I think you'd be really hard-pressed to see a difference. Spot meter, RGB histogram, larger LCD, all present and accounted for on the 30D. The Canon 10-22mm, which you own, is IMO by far the best of the ultra-wide zooms, so that's a plus for staying with Canon; you certainly have made good use of it.

might be a little Late or irrelevant for my comment... but

it's my understanding that you can only shove so many pixels onto any given size sensor before they start "interfering" with each other and making your photos really noisy.

(my) Dave had a panasonic (fz30) with 8mp and it was WAY noisier and worse quality than his 10D which had 6mp... so actually he could upsize the pix from his 10D 100% and they would be cleaner than a pic straight from the panasonic. (I know, this could also be quality issue w/ panasonic, but just an example)

sorry but there's my measely input.... but at least I'm trying to participate... :) let me know if I have any of my info incorrect

No there really isn't. I wanted a 20D for the longest just because the XT (forgive me for saying this) feels like a Soccer Mom's camera. So I was looking for a 20D and done a side by side with the 30D and the LCD screen size was worth the difference for me.

Ok, Dave is already hammering me for what I posted, so let me have it, lol!

Ok, I guess you can't compare P&S sensors to SLR... I just meant that I'd rather have a smaller clean image than a bigger noisy one

man I went from a Nikon D70 to a Canon Rebel XT. I like canon so much better. canon makes faster lenses, and their autofocus on the lower models is better i think. ive shot just about every dSLR out, besides the newest ones.

any suggestions on lens upgrade then?

that 85mm is a rockin lens.
05/29/2006 06:26:24 PM · #41
My brother wanted me to go with the D200 some kind of bad (because he wanted to play with it) and I considered it because then I could borrow lenses off my brother. But, based on the reviews I've read the 30D is the better camera, and it is currently $500 LESS than the D200.

Plus, I don't like the way Nikon treats small dealers, like the one where I buy most of my stuff. I know this one might be silly, I also don't like that new Nikon commercial with Kate Moss in it. I don't think "sexy" should be a selling point for a camera. You don't see Canon or even Olympus, Kodak, or Pentax coming out with silly commercials like that. All their commercials say, "Our camera takes great pictures!" To me, the Kate Moss commercial is just sleazy, and reflects on Nikon on a company. They make a good camera, but you can get about as much bang for your buck with a different maker for a lot less money.
