I'd like to have a challenge where one of the stipulations is no titles. Actually, I'd like there to be an option for all challenges to be able to view and vote without seeing titles. I think that so many people explain the photo with a title and bend their photo to fit the challenge in a way that a voter would probably have never seen without the title. If the photo doesn't explain itself without the title, I don't think it fits the challenge.

(That and there are so many incredibly cheesy titles that it can be painful.)

Sounds great to me!

I usually vote without looking at the titles for the same reasons you stated.

I both agree and disagree with your comments.

Certainly some people use a comment to tie a photo to a challenge - and sometimes this "tie" is very stretched.

On the other hand though sometimes a comment really lifts an image. Personally I only submit an image if it clearly meets the challenge, but then I spend time thinking of a title which can enhance the image. Sometimes my title is cheesy (although I like to call it witty) but it's only because I want to make people smile and enjoy the photo - obviously if I was trying to make a statement I would title the image differently.

I certainly agree with having at least one challenge with no titles though. It would teach a lot about how to make an image stand on its own right. An emotion type topic, like "humourous", might be a good candidate.

While titles can certainly add to an already good image, relying on them to explain how the image fits the challenge is what we're trying to eliminate here. There are many photos in each of the challenges that just wouldn't survive if the title was eliminated. What I say we do is to randomly incorporate challenges where the title wont be available until after voting is over. (And *dont* warn the photogs first!) It will help the photographer get a sense of how well their photo is communicating the central idea.

An image can stand on their own, but half of photography is capturing a moment in time, so that somoene else can experience it. but the photo doesn't necessarily do that on it's own, a title will usually put it into context.

A photograph on it's own could be boring, but if it was about some important event, in a certain place, in a certain time, etc.. the title can "fill in the blank" and give the photo that much more meaning.

Of course, taken in the context of this site, a title can certainly be "made up" to fit a challenge, but most meaning full photographs i dont think would have the same impact without a title. Just like you give a painting a title, you give a photograph a title. There is a reasoning behind this. Taking away the title for a contest might be interesting, but we're going to end up with very *obvious* photos, things that dont need more background information, less depth, and probably less interesting photos as a result. If you have to cummincate the whole idea in the photograph, you cant try for subtilty, we all know that hardly works with the 5 second most people put into voting on a picture. With the speed most people probably vote, the title is half the challenge.

I think long and hard when i choose a title.. sometimes i hit on exactly i want to mean.. sometimes not... Part of the challenge for me here is actually naming the photo. I hadn't really thought of it before actually joining this. My personal website still just has pictures without names in my gallery. But now, after having to come up with titles for my photos here, i'll have to dedicate quite some time into naming the photos on my site one day.. Looking at my gallery now and it looks rather boring without being able to associate each photo with a name, a feeling, a story..

Of course this is just my opinion :)

Unless it is an "open" challenge, each photo actually HAS the challenge topic as its title...for example each entry this week could be titled "Time."
