I just returned my Nikon 1.7x TC because I was extremely dissapointed with the results of that combination (with the 70-200VR). I could almost never get a sharp shot.


I would try again, maybe a bad copy. Mine works great with that combination. A little loss of sharpness but nothing that dramatic.

edit: BTW - here is a shot at full zoom with that combo.

Yeah, that is a nice sharp shot. But I've already returned it and I won't try for another copy without first taking some shots with that combo, and then scrutinizing the results on the computer.

Instead of going through that process in the hopes of getting a good copy, I'm probably going to spend the extra $400 on the Sigma 50-500 and get much more reach and versatility with that combo.

Can't fault you there. You will end up with much better reach. I use my Tamron 200-500 all the time and even use it with a 1.4 TC. Admittedly it gets soft results with that combo but the are usable. Even pretty good if the light is good.
