Time to replace my computer. (On the cheap of course)
Does Windows xp media edition have anything especially good for photography?
I run Photoshop 7 and Illistrator 10, surf the net, play stupid little puzzle games, no music stuff.
If it won't help me I'll just get whatever bundle comes.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Stick with the bundle. Media Center edition mostly caters to music/movie lovers.

If the Pc comes installed media edition it most likely has a tv input and can be used as a dvr. I have the media edition and it is a dvr and I can also connect it to the tv and stereo and use a remote to watch the dvr, dvds and listen to mp3s and guess what? I never use any of it. the dvr is really cool but I already have a tivo and another dvr on my cable box. but I have a pretty nice computer and to get all the things i wanted i had to get the media edition, so if the computer you want comes with it then cool but I wouldn't seek it out.

My laptop has this edition installed. The only thing that I can see it does is if you launch media center, it has buttons to open all the media applications on one interface (slide shows of pics, burn cd/dvd, watch dvd or movie media, listen to music). Other than that, I can't see anything different with it. I have never used it nor have I installed the TV Tuner card that came with the computer.

I am kinda in line with the others. Our laptop is the Media Center Edition and we have only used it once!!! That one time was when we moved from Florida to Guam and were without our household goods and needed/wanted a TV to watch. It came in handy then, but that was it.

i use media center as a tv, i do not have a normal telly in the house, using freeview tuners it records any tv programs i want and then i can watch them on any pc in the house, i love it :)

But not much for photographers, i do like the way when i play a slideshow of pictures on my nice big lcd it sort of zooms and pans around the image.

I did a little more web shopping. It seems that systems with media edition come with built in multi-card readers, might be slightly handy, but not worth spending extra on. I'm so used to having 1 open usb port, but new macines seem to have about 6, so no longer an issue.
Thanks everyone, This helps alot.

I don't see it as a negative, just a selective positive. It won't hurt you to have it (it is like having Windows Plus installed without the themes and junk), but unless you use it, there is no advantage but no disadvantage either.

oh there is a cool screensaver that you only get with mce it 's a box with the edges cut off so you can see inside and it spins with your pictures covering the box not worth any extra but cool :)

Windows XP Media Center (2005) is very cool, especially if you use it with Media Center extenders. Xbox 360 and other Windows XP pro/home can be media center extenders or connectors.

I have one Media Center PC in the spare room hooked into a large flat panel LCD, I have a HDTV, Analog and FM Tuner in the PC. I have a wireless keyboard with media center remote built in. It is a good place to watch TV when the Livingroom TV is being used.

The wife uses it as a PVR to record that channel the STB can't (you can only record two at time on the STB). She then watches those recorded shows out in the Livingroom through the xbox360 Media Center extender.

All my MP3s and Finished Photos are on that media center PC as MCP is a central location for all my media. I can stream those to any PC in the house.

Back to the Xbox360, it is a true Media Center Extender.

With the PC in the back on, I can sit in the livingroom and bring up Media Center through my Xbox360 and my HDTV/Hometheatre setup, Watch Slide shows of my photos, watch anything I recorded (HDTV/Digital, Analog TV etc) in the back room. I can play any of my MP3 playlists as well. Also stream some of those cool channels that are available from the Spotlight Showcase.

With a Windows XP Pro/Home computer as an extender, I can watch any recorded TV on any PC in the house.

Does it add anything for photogs besides the slide show? Not yet but Vista will have MCP as a core component, and will include some new enhancements for photogs.

Shhhh a secret. By the end of the year there will be TV sets with MC extender devices built-in and/or stand alone devices (at a resonable price) available that will allow us to use 1 Media Center PC to control what we watch on all TVs (or flatpanels w/o tuners) in our houses.

Watch your slide shows anywhere...just like when pop would bring that carosel of slides out to show the relatives.

Cable Companies are not increasing our broadband networks at home to 8 and 12M pipes because they like us...they have some really big plans coming down the road... ;)

If you have a set-top-box and watch Pay-per-view and on-demand channels, your STB already has an IP address a streams media across the pipe, Media Center plays well in that environment.

Have some fun with Windows Media Center, you don't even need a TV Tuner (provided that you are plugged into a broadband network).

Launch Media Center, Click the Showcase Spotlight and stream some TV while you work. There's something for everyone there like Reuters, Comedy Central's Motherlode, or my fav...MTVU (University edition) which is up and coming band videos all day long.

Sorry got carried away but technology is fun...
