Okay here's the deal....I got $1500 to spend on camera equipment at B&H. I am trying to solidify and start rounding out my collection. I would rather round out, than improve what I got for now, but all suggestions are much appreciated.

Here is what I have:

Nikon D70
Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6G
Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Nikon
Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G IF-ED
SB-600
Lighsphere
2.5 GBs of Storage
External Storage Drive

Here is what I am getting for sure:

Sigma Zoom Super Wide Angle 10-20mm f/4-5.6D EX DC HSM Autofocus Lens ($500)

Here is what I want with remaining $1000:

Tripod that will last, sturdy $200-300 range. Preferably Manfrotto/Bogen/Giotto or some great name. But help me find a specific one. Would something like this have to have a ballhead...Giotto Tripod

Any good review places for tripods?

Other than that I basically need suggestions. The Tripod and the additional $600-$800 bucks should get me some sweet thing(s). I kinda was thinking some equpiment/lighting/setup stuff to help me with stock. Perhaps strobes? I don't know. Help me everyone. Thanks.

$1500 is a lot money, until i start thinking about what you got and want...

sigma 70-200 2.8 - and sell your 70-300, then get a 1.4xTC. Once you use a 70-200 2.8 you can't go back. the 1.4X is cheap and for those times you need 300mm (at f4 too). You can get a tamron tc for $100 or less off ebay. the sigma lens is 800ish

tripod and head...i got a nice one from amvona off ebay - at-828, grip head and tripod for $68. very similar to the bogen 3021 (which is my recomendation, you don't need the Pro version but B (for black) is nice)

over at zipzoomfly.com (and elsewhere i suppose) you can get a 2Gb CF card for $60-90 (kingston elite pro 50X and sandisk ultra 2 respectively, 2 weeks ago pricing). Free shipping. you can't have too much memmory, you can shoot all RAW and not worry about it.

i like the tokin 12-24 f4 myself over the sigma 10-20. i want a bit more speed and constant aperture over the slightly wider angle of view.

Since you're looking for a super-wide, get the Canon 10-22mm. If for some reason it doesn't work for you, I'll go ahead and take it off your hands at the GTG;-) Really, I don't mind.

It will work for him if he has the special adapter. It's a pentax-minolta unit made by zeiss, very rare. I'll sell him mine.

I love my Gitzo G-1158 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod. It is so good that sometimes I want to take it with me and leave camera at home.

As far as wide, go with Nikon.

I don't really use ebay. I might sell my 70-300 for a few bucks if do upgrade, but that is all dependant. Any other ideas, evening folks?

I find the Bogen 3001BD and 488RC2 to do the trick perfectly.

Prof_Fate is right -- that 70-200 and 1.4x TC is an awesome combo...and for the future, a nice monopod to go with it all. The Bogen 3216 is nice.

^-- that's how I'd spend the $1500 if I had the 10-20 already...but since you need it, i'd say...

Now: 10-20, 70-200 2.8 with Sigma 1.4x TC (that actually equals just about exactly $1500.

--

Then just throw in another $50 and get the monopod...

And when you have the extra for the tripod, get it then...actually, at that point, you can sell the 70-300 and get a tripod with that money.

--

Actually, I lied..if I had the $1500, I'd save for another little while and get the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 EX DG HSM ... Now that is one remarkeable piece of glass...coupled with a 1.4x TC you get ~150-420 f/4 -- insanity.

How about a nice set of Alien Bees?

deapee,

great help. i appreciate it. your last idea is oh, so tempting.

fotomann,

Could you recommend a nice set? In all the areas of photography, I would say lighting/studio/strobes setups are my lowest level of expertise.

Paterson Stellar 300 kit - less cost than AB400s and more power than the Ab800s. ($498)

And you'll need a lightmeter - sekonic L358 is good ($250 ish)

4 lights are better than two....but either AB or stellar lights some with cheap umbrellas and stands, so you'll likely want to upgrade them at some point.

and get Grey's Master Lighting Guide
