Is that an educated guess?

yup.
EDIT: I've been making movie/video posters for Warner Bros./Warner Home Video from 1994 -1997. You won't believe what can be made out of a single frame taken from a movie...

wouldn't it be a bit cheaper to take a photo instead of creating an image like this?

my hubby likes to make 3D things, and that's so time-consuming. a photo would work a lot faster I think.

Look, i'm not disputing the fact that there is a lot of digital work involved... but seriously, if you look at the picture of Famke Janses (Jean Grey) - that definately didnt come out of the movie. She posed.

You might be right, but be sure there's little left of the original shot. Ever seen this website? Click on Retouching.

That just shows me a little bit of retouching?

Fact is, someone still took a photograph?

I think it is a combination of photography, a LOT of editing, 3D and backgrounds.

The only thing I see amazing on the retouching part of that site is how plastic some of the people look. Other than that it looks like a dodge/burn and liquify clinic, the results of which are less than amazing.

don't be offended - just wanted to tell you, if you find those X-Men posters incredible (i don't even think they are noticable), it is not due to a good photographic work, but to a good graphic designer and/or photoshop expert

He he he...

I still think the photography plays a big part. Oh, and the styling of course.

They wouldn't get a b-rated photographer and the world's best digital team to put it together would they? Like ignite said, it's a combination of things, but out of a photographic point of view, the photographer needed to direct the shot as well as light it nicely etc.

I would imagine?
