One of the my goals for this year is to click more "street photos". Here is my first attempt on same. I did not realized how much color streets have to offer till I saw it in the pictures. Your critique and comment is much desired on my first attempt with "people". Some of the pictures from collection (taken over period of last one year) -

I wish you had your photos on a website that offers a decent slideshow. Looking at a bunch of photos on DPC is such a pain :-(

Despite that, I loved looking at them, thanks for sharing.

I have been fortunate to travel to a number of places in my life, but India has never been one of them even though it has always been on "the list".

So many beautiful people, so colorful, SO photogenic!!

Hi tejinder,
Nice series of candids you have there. And yes, colour, we have in ample amounts!
Why dont you write some guidelines for shooting candid, specifically for India, maybe a summary/collections of your experiences actually doing the shoots?

I would like to add my voice to the comment by Arati Halbe - it won't be soon but one day I will visit India, actually it's a dream I have had long before I joined this site.. please consider writing about your experiences tejinder and I will save them for when I do visit.

Well, I think a camera with good zoom is must. Try not to make subject conscious of being clicked. I normally tell a friend to pose for me in front of subject but I zoom in on subject for photo. This gives the feel as if I'm clicking my friends picture whereas actually I'm focussing something in background. This might not be possible if you are alone. I stress again on long zoom camera (I use 5x zoom) as you can be at distance from subject. Choosing a crowded place (which India is anyway :)) also helps.

The good (or bad..?) thing about India is that you can stop you vehicle at any possible place on road. So many of the pictures are taken from my drivers seat also.

And yes- you wont get much time for setting the camera. So keep it in mode which offers "best exposure". Rest of the tweeking can be done in post processing. I normally keep it in custom mode which is set for high shutter speed and auto-ESP metering. This works best for my camera.

I cannot think of more tips. But I'm sure other DPCers will add to this list for first time "street photographers" like us :)

tejinder, I was in India in nov 2004 for my cousin's wedding and though I did not have much time for street photography, I got a few shots, and I can really say that as much as india is crowded, often dirty and usually pungent, its beautiful in its colour and people and everyone seems to smile! I loved it.

As for street photography, I find you can even set up your tripod and take pictures if you look disinterested in the people before your camera. They assume you're shooting behind them and it works well for me. But sometimes you know they know!

Thanks for the tip! Just noticed that the picture you posted is taken in the city I'm currently in :) (Chandigarh).
