Can anyone suggest an inexpensive digital camera whcich can take good macro. Digital SLRs will be too expensive for me.

Try Olympus C70/C7000 Z. I have few macros in my profile taken with this camara. It lets you focus as close at 2 cm in super macro mode.

...and I think its available in range of 300-400 $

What's your budget? -- "inexpensive" is too vague,

What's a "good" macro? -- almost all P&S cameras have a Macro mode which does a decent job.

What else do you want to use this camera for? How big do you want to print.

When you get suggestions, check them out at DPReview -- their reviews typically include a section on macro performance, including test shots.

The Canon S2/S3 IS cameras have a "Super Macro" mode which will focus a 0cm, if you can get light onto your subject, are image-stablized with a 12x zoom. They also include a tilt/swivel LCD which lets you shoot more conveniently at odd angles. The S2 is now about $350, the S3 about $500.

There's a Pentax Optio model for about $300 which includes being waterproof to a 5-foot depth, but I forget the quality its macro performance; that seems like a good "carry around everywhere" camera ...

Tejinder Thanks, I checked up a few reviews of Olympus and it seems nice. Your portfolio is great too.
BTW I am at Delhi too (Your profile suggests you are based at Delhi).

Some (not all) of the Nikon Coolpix models have excellent macro capabilities. I use an older Coolpix 995 for work-related macro stuff. I keep it in my desk. Check out DPReview, they usually do a great job with reviews, and the Coolpix models are well represented.

Though Olympus C70/7000 is great at macros, it lacks on few paramaters ('sharpness' above all). Still its a great camera which offers 7.1 MP and RAW mode. Can't complain for what I got for 400$ (I think it should be cheaper now).

And Yes - I'm based out of Delhi (actually Gurgaon).

I second this. Check my portfolio for samples.

Yes, the Nikon Coolpix 950 and 8700 both had excellent macro modes.

The 8700 will focus at less than 1 inch.
