I am thinking of buying one... maybe a 42 inch. But they come in black, silver, gold, and white. I'm thinking about the one that is gold and then silver on the other side.
Anyone else have experience with these? What do I need to know?? |

I know you won't regret buying one or two of them :-) They come in very handy for outdoor portrait work.

| You need to know you will wish you had a third hand. Rather than get one that is gold on one side silver on the other get one of the 5 in 1 sets so you have everything. |

Gold reflectors warm a photo. Silver cools a photo. White is pretty much neutral.
The black ones absorb light (or more to the point keep light from being reflected) and work as the opposite of a reflector subtracting light from an area of the photo.

Some of them (the 5-in-Ones) include a diffuser as well. I use the diffuser as much as I use one of the reflectors so I think the 5-in-One is well worth it.

Related question - I have a little collapsible diffuser (for flowers and stuff like that). Got it a couple months ago, popped it open just nicely, but I haven't figured out how to collapse it again. Any ideas?
It's sort of round with a wire like thing on the outside, and originally it was sort of twisted and stuffed into this little tiny bag.

| Put your hands at 8 and 4 and rotate them toward the center. It will form a figure 8 that will collapse on itself. |

consider the clock positions
place right palm at 2, right elbow at 5, left palm at 9.
pull on right palm, push on righ elbow, push on left hand
pull the right further towards your body and in between the right elbow and left hand.. and you got it

Just an FYI...
The 5-in-1's (black, gold, silver, white, and diffuser) are about $60 on B&H. I bought a brand new one on Ebay for $32 (S&H included). Check there first to save a few bucks.

I've had one of the 5-in-1's for a while and am glad I got that rather than a simple reversable. Having a diffuser as part of it is very helpful.
Folding them - yeah it's a bit tricky but once you've got it, you've got it. If you've ever had those collapsable windscreen/windshield reflectors for your car, they fold exactly the same way except they're smaller. The key is that when you start, twist one hand towards you but keep the other one still.

I've knocked myself in the face a couple times, trying to fold my 5-in-1 from Alien Bees...LOL
