Do what I did - buy a truck that doesn't fit and voila! Instant studio! |

Shoot 2/3 body or head/chest shots with models sitting. Before I had so much space, I shot "smaller shots". Even a closet is big enough for product-type shots. |
Set aside a few days to read it as it is currently at page 96!
I do a lot of product stuff there at the moment, or standing kids (Dwarfs could also stand).
I've been thinking I will place a reflector on the celing and lght up onto it reflecting down onto the hair, rather than lighting down onto the hair, this will also save me some space. |

You could be a famous dwarf photographer!! :) Bouncing the light for hair is a good idea. For reflectors, I like those pop out windshield reflectors that are meant to keep the hot sun out of your car. They're inexpensive and work great.

Here's an idea for everybody looking for studio space: When I played in a band, we rented one of those storage sheds to keep all of our stuff in, and to practice in.
I can see the same thing being done for photography. It's probably not the cheapest solution, but if you can afford all of your studio equipment, then you could most likely spring for it.
Things to watch out for:
1) MAKE SURE IT IS WEATHER-PROOFED!
2) Be sure to check for outlets, the place we rented had one in each, but a lot of places don't.
3) If at possible, rent an indoor climate-controlled unit.
4) If your doing anything besides shooting family/friends/acquaintences, I wouldn't suggest going this route. Your clients will wonder what's up when they're driving to a remote storage facility to 'have their picture taken.' |

You could always buy portable equipment and shoot in abandoned buildings :)

Cool in the summer warm in the winter!
The problem is that I have to keep a booking calendar so as not to conflict with my wife ;)

Good news! I promised myself a new camera bag if yesterday and last weekend's shoots paid for it. Between the sitting fees and the print order I got this morning, the bag is paid for.
Even better, yesterday's model saw her proofs this morning and referred a friend who just called and set up a session. So now..... if HER shoot goes well and earns enough, I'm going to spring for a nice white lino floor with double padding under it. :)

Time to convert another room! You don't really need a kitchen do you?

Holy Carp you guys must be loaded! I could only dream of spaces like those! I have a small section in my basement, that is yet to be cleared out that I have allocated but it is such a large task that I have no idea where to begin. I am not professional, but would like to have my own home studio some day.
Thanks so much for sharing your photos. Anyone else wanna show theirs? (I meant studios...just making myself clearer ;) ) |

hehehee not loaded, just lucky enough to not have a spouse helping me spend my money! lol
Seriously, except for the lights, everything in my studio was collected with a tight budget to work with.

Congrats for sure! It is always more rewarding to set a goal like this and have it pay off!

So you can change the label from 'Cold Floor' to 'Cool New Floor'

Nice space. My garage is detached and cold, not to mention full of cars, parts tools and other assorted junk.
How are the white walls working out? I have seen black (for light control) and heard 18% gray be recomended. I was thinking a black ceiling (see below) and the floor is already gray...walls, i dunno.
Last winter I set a play studio in my basement. It used to have a 1 car garage so to do it 'right' i need to remove a block wall...not structural but heavy! Part of the basement has the remnants of a plaster ceiling and some is just joists - i figure i can stick a light up in there maybe. When that is done i will have decent space that i can invite clients into. The only negative is that height issue..still thinking on ways to resolve that.

I actually really like the white walls. I can use any surface to bounce light and get a nice soft effect. The (cold) floor is gray, but I want to replace that with white or white/black check.

Cripes! You don't 'fold' backdrops. You stuff them into containers to avoid lines and such. |

My studio got an upgrade yesterday!! I'm so thrilled I could scream! Spent a whopping $103 and purchased a new studio FLOOR! :) Oh.... and installed it myself! :D Took a couple of hours to completely empty the studio of EVERYTHING, then about 2 hours to lay the new floor (vinyl tiles), then another hour or so to put everything back in place. End result: One happy photographer! I'll have clients in later today so I'm very very glad I got this project finished.... finally!
You can see the old ugly concrete floor in the pics at the beginning of this thread.... I really love the difference the new floor makes.
*grins and grins and grins*
