ON THE ROAD IN AMERICA
CENTRAL APPALACHIA
Sunday, September 10 â Sunday, September 17, 2006
The idea behind this âon the roadâ series is to document life in Americaâs towns, to learn how to approach people you donât know, and to capture a place and its people. We will either exhibit the work, try to get it published, or both!
This trip begins by flying into Knoxville, Tenn. From here, weâre going north into Kentucky, where weâll continue to travel along the eastern border into southern West Virginia. Most of our time will be spent in this coal-mining region, in towns named War, Christian, Omar, Avondale, and more.
One of many great things about this particular trip is that weâve aligned with a non-profit organization that is working to improve the lives of people living in this region and weâve offered to let them use some of our photographs to help them with their work.
Workshop Fee: $2,095
(Includes tuition, double room occupancy for 7 nights, breakfast, two vans and drivers. Does not include airfare, single room supplement, most meals, or exhibit expenses.)
COPPER CANYON MEXICO BY TRAIN
Monday, October 9 â Monday, October 16, 2006
This is a spectacular journey by train through Mexicoâs Sierra Madre Mountains. Copper Canyon is located in the Tarahumara Range of the Western Sierra Madre. Urique Canyon is the deepest canyon in North America and possesses the worldâs larges proliferation of major canyons confined to a relatively small area. The Tarahumara Indians still maintain their ancient culture. They are semi-nomadic and speak Raramuri, a language belonging to the Uto-Aztecan family. They are shy, live in small family groups inhabiting natural shelters, and are famed long-distance runners.
This trip is organized by a travel agency who has formed a partnership with the Tarahumara Indians in which the firm hires and trains them as naturalist guides. Our group will not only have exclusivity on the train and in the lodges during this eight-day trip, but we will also have a private railcar with an open deck for the best part of the rail ride.
We will fly in an out of Los Mochis airport. The train ride itself is only a small part of this adventure. There are colonial plazas with colorful local markets that weâll visit. Weâll see a traditional âDance of the Deerâ ceremony in a secluded Mayo Indian village, and weâll visit a Tarahumara school and a 17th Century gold-domed Jesuit mission church. There is also an El Fuerte River cruise, which also includes a stop to explore a nearby hill with ancient and well-preserved Nahuatl Petroglyphs. More than 60 species of birds are frequently spotted from the boat.
Workshop Fee: $2,395
(Includes tuition, double room occupancy for 7 nights, all meals, all beverages â including soft drinks, margaritas, cervezas and wine â a Bilingual Naturalist-trained resident guides, all transfers, all admission fees and taxes, plus river cruise, a private railcar with an open-air viewing on our own private train car on the best part of the rail ride. Does not include airfare, single room supplement, travel insurance.)
VIETNAM , from North to South
Wednesday, January 17 â Sunday, January 28, 2007
Our first trip to Vietnam took place this past January and it was such an extraordinary trip that weâre doing it again. This time it will be even better, now that we know our way around and what we loved most.
Weâll begin in Hanoi, one of the most fascinating cities I have ever seen. Weâll be staying for two nights in Hanoi before boarding an overnight train to the northern region of Vietnam, right at the China border. Weâll stay in Sapa, a mountain village even more beautiful than the guidebooks tell you. Weâll be staying here for three nights while discovering the area. After another overnight train ride back to Hanoi, we will fly into Hue, a place described by the Lonely Planet guidebook as âthe heartbeat of Vietnam, a centre of political intrigue, cultural innovation, religious worship and educational excellence.â Weâll stay for one night here before taking the bus south to Hoi An, where weâll stay in a ritzy place right on the beach. Hoi An is known for its exquisite silks. You can have custom made clothes during our two-day stay! There is a lot to photograph too, of course. From Hoi An, weâll fly into Ho Chi Minh City, where weâll stay one night before the trip ends.
We have aligned with a travel agency for this trip who we used on our first trip. We were VERY WELL taken care of (over the top!) and will be again.
Weâll be flying into Hanoi and out of Ho Chi Minh City. Our travel agency can help you book your flight.
We will exhibit the work at The Julia Dean Gallery upon our return.
Workshop Fee: $2,495
(Includes: Tuition, all transportation in Vietnam including two domestic flights, all meals, double room occupancy for 11 nights, interpreter, and guide. Does not include international airfare, travel insurance, single room supplement, or exhibit expenses.)

I wonder how much a direct flight from Miami to Vietnam is. I know, a direct flight is not likely in existence, but I might have to check into the airfare.
This trip sounds like the best of the three, and I'd like to do someting like this. |
