Cindi,
I gave you a 5. Mostly because of the no face thing. I would argue that a portrait requires a face. I did like the shot. I thought it would do better in another type of challenge. Like "Kid floating in lake" challenge. It would have nailed that one ;-)
You want frustrating?? Mine finished 5th. My highest score and finish yet. It stayed in the 7.2 range for most of the voting. I'm kinda new here, so I went to the archives. 7.2 usually finishes in the top 3. Except in this challenge where the top 11 finishers are north of 7. And 1,2, and 3 have 39 ribbons between them.
The subject is my wife. We stayed up until the results were posted at 11:20 CDT. I just knew she was going to be on the main DPC page. Alas, close but not ribbon.
Finishing in the top is pretty cool though, for now!
I do enjoy your work.
David

I'M NOT FROM ICELAND! yup yup! That must be it! |
And the kid is OBVIOUSLY American. You'd have done much better with a third world kid swimming.
Seriously, it looks more like an environmental candid than an environmental portrait to me. I gave it a 5 solely based on *MY* interpretation of an environmental portrait. EPs are some of my favorite shots to take, and I have tons of ideas for them. I'm just too chicken to share my ideas with the subjects ask people to pose for me.
THIS is an environmental portrait in my little world. With a crisp focus, this would have been a great entry!

Wow, David. Nice finish! Sorry it didn't ribbon, but still a job WELL done. You and your wife should be quite proud of that one! :)

Hard to be sympathetic to someone who is unhappy about a score that is above my average. But I guess that's just a matter of perspective. I'm not a professional photographer.
As for "Watching the Fishes", my feelings agree with some of the other posters. Not showing the boy's face makes it harder for the viewer to identify with him. And his surroundings are just too dark to give enough context to overcome the lack of a facial expression in an EP. Any of the four diver-in-water shots among your outtakes would have addressed my criticisms better, and, IMHO, earned you a better score. Of them I like 3633-1B best, it has very good facial contact, and the green water is very pleasing, maybe cropped just a little tighter. I don't think your entry is a bad shot, or DNMC, you just didn't make the best choice on which to enter. We all make that same mistake at one time or another; heaven and the dpc voters know that I have.
Do wish you could learn to express your frustrations without having to call your fellow dpc'ers names. Togue-in-cheek doesn't always come across well on the internet.
I hope you get a more satisfying score in Self Portrait.

Thanks! It was a very exciting week. I think I hit refresh about a zillion times. Hopefuilly I'll be in the 7+ territory again. None of my current entries will get that high though.

Do it nude, holding a baby, and you'll get either blue or brown!
Cindi, I absolutely love the water in the first diver shot. Like everything about it, actually, if it had been a touch sharper on his face. :)

It was a very tight finish; just a few thousands of a point separated our images from the red ribbon, let alone the yellow. It's actually a fairly interesting scoring distribution in the top 11. I like your image a lot, it feels sweet and "real".
Robt.

This was one of my favorites in the challenge - I absolutely loved the way you had all the kids in motion and the teacher still - perfect example of an environmental portrait if you ask me. Maybe not the "technically perfect" we all seek, but a very fine representation and a super portrait. Congrats on your score and placement! |

Oh, and Mr. "I can do more than just water and skiffs" Bear, yours was quite a fine example as well! Interesting editing steps - maybe you should start a new thread and explain a bit as to the hows and whys? |

White we're ranting. I'd love to know the reasoning behind the 4 people that voted my entry a 3. I think I've given out a 3 vote 5 or 6 times in all the challenges I've voted in. The entry has to be way off mark or technically useless for me to consider a 3. I give the cell phone entries higher than 3. RANT RANT RANT
