its too bad the horse might die because of a broken leg brought on by gamblers.

Man, we need a mad face disgusted face smiley button. Don't even get me started on the racing industry.

Too sad, I watched him win the Derby and it's heartbreaking to see this happen :(

YEAH! damn gamblers jumping out on the race track and beating the poor horses ankle till it broke. It is all their fault.

Yes, more than likely he has a future of a stud horse. Us human males could be so lucky :-)

My dad is quoted in that article. Larry Bramlage.

After rereading the thread, I feel I need to comment further. My dad is an equine veterinarian. Race horses do not have bad lives. They are treated well and they enjoy racing. They are proud when they win and disappointed when they lose, just like humans. Horses are large, powerful, willful, intelligent animals - if a horse did not enjoy racing, the trainers and jockeys couldn't make him perform. Furthermore, most of the horses my dad works on break bones while running around in fields, etc., not by racing. It is very unfair to blame the injury on "gamblers" and, in my opinion, is a hijacking of this thread which was not political to begin with.

I cried when I watched this, its so horrible to see. The thing I dont understand is that, when he jumped the gate previous to the race starting they did nothing at all to check him, just put him back in the gate!! The vet never came out to look at his legs and the jockey never walked him in a few circles to make sure he was walking normal. If a horse hurts a front leg (which could happen by pushing through a metal gate really hard, perhaps) they will put more weight on their back legs which- in my unprofessional, personal opinion- is why he ended up fracturing the hind leg.

Everyone keep your fingers crossed for him that he won't need to be put down. :(

I agree that some racehorses have a good life, but what is the percentage that are treated well once they get to the track, and their lives afterwards? The majority out there aren't the ones we see on TV, and they get out once a day for an hour to race. If they blow it and don't make the money back invested, many are considered disposable.

I am not any kind of activist, nor do I belong to any "groups". Having worked in the equestrian field, I had my heart broken too many times because of "budgets", and it's just a hard fact that most of these animals are part of a business, and business is about money.

I will say this--I HOPE THE GUY MAKES IT!!!!!!

Here's a link to a post surgery report on his condition: Barbaro's surgery on leg fractures successful, but horse still in danger. The best way to think about what happened to Barbaro is the way the people at New Bolton talked about it, an athletic injury suffered in competition.

It made me cry when I watched it also. As for "blaming" it on "gamblers", that's bogus IMO. Even though it's true that the life of a subpar racehorse in the minor leagues may not be that great, nevertheless ANY racehorse has a better life than your average beef cattle, for example. And horses are perfectly capable of injuring themselves on their own, happens all the time.

Robt.

If he's going to be retired to stud, i hope he doesn't pass on a tendencey towards fragile bones. :(

Being offended by the topic or offering a political opinion on a topic is NOT hijacking a thread. Even the SC seems to make this mistake sometimes.

What I'm doing now, however, IS hijacking a thread. Now that I've made my point, with examples, I will quickly exit stage right...
