Ok. I just went out and purchased a whack of filters for my camera last night.

I went in with the intention of getting B+W or Hoya, but the guy at the store recommended this 'local' Japanese brand Marumi. I do tend to put some weight on what that guy says. I have discussed a number of photographic issues with him and he is quite capable. He also shoots with all L glass and has a number of his prints in large size around the store.

I haven't heard of them in general photography discussions, but I had a look through the two different circular polarizers and the difference was remarkably stark.

He said that the Marumi circular polarizer is better and proceeded to explain that they make their filters with thinner elements.

It was immediately and strongly noticeable when looking through the filter as the Marumi was MUCH clearer than the B+W. The Linear Polarizer by Marumi was also available although it seems to be an older design and has similarly thick glass. There was also noticeable haziness similar to that in the B+W.

I was quite surprised to see the hazy quality of the B+W filter. It didn't even seem to be something so subtle as to only be visible when compared side by side.

Does anyone have any comments on Circ polarizers and Marumi in particular?

I ended up getting a circular polarizer, a linear polarizer (for stacking for experimentation), and two Cokin graduated ND filters. +2 and +4

Now I will need to find a way to deal with those hunks of glass.

But that's another thread... :)

I got 2 marumi filters [UV + Circular polirizer (58mm)], i didn't try another filters to see and compare but i can say it is really good filters, i think most filters are the same regardless of the way of make. I got 2 Cokin filters as well [(UV+CPL (77mm)], i tried on my 24-70L and it seems they are good enough, so i can tell you that most filters can be similar to each other, so if you can get Canon or Nikon or Hoya that is good, if not then Cokin or tokina or marumi or whatever can be the same, at least you can have the effect from these filters.

Thanks. Glad to hear that someone has had good experiences with them...

I personally chose to purchase 72mm filters and add step-down rings.

I feel this will help prevent vignetting when stacking filters.

Any other comments? Specifically comparisons between marumi, B+W and Hoya...

I didn't have a chance to view any hoya products.
