So I was shooting downtown last night and thought it owuld be very nice to have a flash. Despite using hte 50mm 1.8, I would love to get more light and use a slower lense for a wider angle. What would ya'll recommend? Im no pro (yet) and jsut want somthing that is somewhat adjustable but doesnt need to run in conjuction with a whole studio full of lights. Any help would be great! |

Sigma 500DG
Sigma 500DG Super
The Super gives you more control. Both have roughly the same output as a 580EX and will support E-TTL II
For diffusion, people generally recommend the Lightsphere, but I'm not sure how it performs outdoors... |

Sigma 500 if low on funds, 430EX if you got the bucks.

are you photographing buildings, people, etc? if people, get Gary Fong's lightsphere II for diffusion...if buildings, I'd just bring along a tripod and use longer shutter speeds |

I shoot a little bit of everyhting but want to gravitate twards fashion, as thats what Id like eventually get paid for. I have just recently started working with models and realized how harsh a built in is. Im gonna be picking up some diffuser panles and reflectors in the comming weeks as well. I will be doing location shoots for ads, but the ads are in a college magazine and dont need to be sooper professional, but its giving my a good oppourtunity to learn and try things out so. Any lighting info would be great |

Wow, shooting outdoors is a big pain in the butt when it comes to direct vs non-direct lighting.
You haven't got anything to bounce off if you are outside, so a reflector is going to be a must. If you have daylight, reflecting it is a good start. If you can't aford the 40 dollar foldout reflector, grab the famous car windshield screen reflector that has that silvery stuff on the outside and is highly portable.
In any case, shooting outdoors is usually the kind of thing that requires an assistant.
If you don't have any friends, I would check some local photography clubs and see if you can find any students who are willing to come along just for some fun.

Ryen... A girlfriend is a pretty good assistant too... until you want to take pictures of her... Then you have to get another girlfriend to assist that shoot and then you have a catfight...
Best done with ample, but soft natural lighting so you can shoot the whole thing without actually needing a third... :)
E-TTL is the acronym for Electronic Through The Lens flash metering.
It uses a bunch of information from the cameras sensors to compare things such as background light, subject light without flash and subject light with flash and tries to balance them all so the flash looks gentle and not overpowering. Depending of course on the settings (cameras such as the Rebel XT and 20D etc have special settings for Av mode which can change the way the camera uses the information).
E-TTL II is a more recent version and I believe that the most notable advancement was the ability to use focal distance information from the lens to help the camera to calculate it's flash exposure.
If you want just a simple on-body flash that can use this, I believe the Sigma 500DG non-super will be a great choice. I think it's around 130 USD.
Yido, if you are still out there, I wonder if you could contribute your reasoning for recommending the 430EX over the 500DG Super?
