I was in the most low light situation I have ever been in tonight. My lens would hardly focus! It was not a disaster because I knew how to "get around it" but my question is:

do some lenses focus better in low light? (I mean, I was using my 18-55 kit lens) I know some are 'faster' with the lower aperture but will they focus better??? I can't really go to manual focus because I can't seem to tell if it's OOF either.

As these lenses focus with the aperture wide open (the aperture is only closed down to the selected aperture when the shot is taken), then lenses with wider apertures provide an advantage in focussing in low light, as the wider aperture lets more light into the camera. In other words, yes, some lenses are better than others. The 50mm f/1.8 is a pretty standard suggestion in this regard.

last night i had the same issue.. i started with my 75-300 with terrible results, then i thought i would use the kit lens too.. also hopeless. I was at a concert and the last thing i wanted to do was miss anything. I thought i would try one last thing and that was use my 50mm 1.8. It made a huge difference. Of course the best lens to get would be the 70-200 2.8 but if you are like me that is out of reach.. The 50mm sure did its job last night for me and they are cheap.

damnit! I have the 24-70 2.8!!! I just didn't realize... But I did have some very wide shots that I'm not sure I could have gotten. and the thing is so heavy!!!

I think I need a better lens that will cover the 18-55. my next purchase was going to be the 35mm but now I'm thinking zoom. I really don't like having to change lenses sometimes.

What I really need is new pants like kirbic has... that guy has so many lenses in his pants!!! :0P
