Did I miss the bit that said take a photo of a clock? I thought there was the posibility of a huge range of expression here, and am really quite disappointed in what I've seen so far. True though, there are some good photos - of clocks.
Ed
PS. Despite my rapidly plummeting score, I reamin pleased that I didn't submit a shot of a clock. Or watch, for that matter.

I thought the scope of the challenge left it wide open. I am not surprised at the number of clocks/watches which have been submitted though.
After getting half way through my voting, I think a lot of the top photos will be of clocks/watches (you are right - several excellent ones), although there are a few really great shots which dont involve a time peices of any kind. Its the essence of the photo that illustrates "time". I also chose not to submit a clock photo. Just felt I needed to do something different. |

When I look at a photo I try not to look at the title at first since I don't want it to influence my outlook on the photo itself.... but I feel I have to do just that for this challenge. I find it difficult to give a good mark when the pic needs a title to justify the theme. Anyone think like me??

4.8 and falling...
Although the challenge topic wasn't "Clock" or "Watch", I did anticipate some problem with folks drawing the connection between my shot and "Time". As a result, I am relying pretty heavily upon my title to help with the connection. Unfortunately, being creatively on the fringe of the challenge topic won't help my score.
I have to agree with Ed, though. I made a conscious choice NOT to submit a shot of a clock or watch. Granted, I also made an effort to step into the abstract a bit, too. No point in grousing about it, I guess!

I think like you kosmikkreeper.
I look at the image, knowing the challenge is 'time', and rate it without looking at the title. I might look at the title afterwards to see what the photographer meant if the image itself doesn't somehow say 'time' to me. I think the image should express what the photographer wants to convey, not the title.

Yeah, way too many of the entries relied on the title to explain the photo. Some of them were a huge stretch.. This is one of those challenges where ya gotta be blatent -- save the creativity for the challenges more suited for creativeness. Showing me a photo of an old guy doesn't say time to me, it says old guy. I thought the photo of the rusted bolt was a good creative one that demonstrated time pretty well though.
I musta got a bunch of crap scores today because I dropped from mid 7s last night after about 20 votes to mid 6s today with 45 votes :( |

Everytime I update my stats, my score drops.
I also expected to see clocks/watches in half of the entries. I guess with my picture, you have to think for a couple of seconds to see the relation with time, instead of the first thing it comes to mind when viewing it.
I'm pretty happy with my picture, but I'm mad to see its score fall.

I'm being pretty liberal when it comes to judging these images. Mine is also
not of a clock or watch, but I've been able to see "time" in most of the photos
this week.
While I do think that a photo should speak for itself without a
title, sometimes a title really gives the image a lot of power.

On the flip side, I've seen some that are beyond the stretching point of 'creativity.' An old building shows time - generational pics of a family show time - but sometimes that old rusty car just doesn't get it across. One winter in Maine would do that. Sometimes it's just totally unclear and I look at the title and it makes no sense. I am one of those who submitted a timepiece of SOME kind and I am happy with the pic I submitted, sitting on 5.9 right now though.

got some favorable comments regarding my time entry, but some did not understand my entry. Our challenge "Time" is wide in scope, its not only watch, the time in your clock, it can be sunset/sunrise or a baby and old man in one picture, old tree, old building, etc. Oh well, anyway i just respect their opinion..Two comments i got...dont meet the challenge but dont worry you got a 9 score because the picture is so beautiful, thanks anyway.. |

By the way, there are a few clock/watch photos that are STUNNING and deserve to be in the top 10.
Usually, these went way beyond just recording a clock, but through the use of light and other techniques, moved me.
So thanks for the images: clock or not!

whaples, I'm not saying it's NOT open to creativity, I just think it's not best suited for a creative photo. I think a clock or a watch photo is gonna win this one.
This is a pretty specific challenge.. I think the broader ones like "Green", "Yellow", "Love", etc. are better for the creative photos. Just my way of thinking.. |

joebar - beware the hubris of putting a frowny face after your really very good score of 6.5+.

I think these challenges are like an editor saying: "Get me a picture about TIME!"
And so you do it. If you come up with a creative, cool photo about time, the editor
is pleased. If it is boring or of low quality, she won't be. Whether or not it is of a clock is irrelevant,
as long as it communicates "Time" and as long as it is worthy to print in the magazine.

Complaining of photographs of clocks in a challenge titled Time is similar to complaining of photographs of bridges in a challenge called Bridges. That is my opinion anyway. There is a danger of trying so desperately to become original that we end up with the same obtuse interpretations of the subject.
Anthony.
(p.s. - Yes, I photographed a clock :-)) |

there's nothing wrong with the "clocks" images...i gave them a high marks if they deserve it... and im sure one of them will make it to the top slot.

Woo hoo, I have an obtuse interpretation of the subject! My score is 3.6 something, and probably dropping, oh well. Keep on trying I guess.

I hope I never see another clock, watch, sundial,or hourglass ever again!
Voting on that challenge was brutally repetitive.
