I've clearly two camps in the voters comments. Some say 'great, very creative' and others say 'terrible quality' and then I have the trolls, so I'm sitting below average. I don't mind, I know who I am LOL sharp mind but a blurry look.
I've done voting, have to make comments yet.
I see a lot of overly use of NI for my taste, don't like that in portraits, like the raw skin best, because nobody's perfect (thank God).

I just want to give a great big Thank You for all the great comments, especially to ubique, one of the most interesting and insightful comments I think I've ever received.
My score may not be where I'd like it, but the comments more than make up for it. Many Thanks guys! :-)

Good news:
I've got 15 comments and 2 favorites, already. That's good, for me. And much thanks to everyone who voted!
Bad news:
A big grasshopper seems to be more appealing than my face:( My self portrait will be my second best. |

I am so bummed with my comments. Not that anyone here really knows what I look like anyway.. But seems my score is consitant with everything I submit here... but the success entry should be really good...
Anyway.. back to this one. It seems I am constantly given a lower score for being a little off... In other words, my image is a little blured. Not a lot but just a little...
granted for a normal entry I would make sure it was crisp.. but for this... it is a self portrait and well.. No one knows me or nearly understands me, basicly in life I am not clear.... so wouldn't a photograph show that just the same? Granted, most don't think out of the box in that manner.
And my entries and scores show that.
Im bummed.. yeah.. but its cool i guess... makes me all that more unique.

Man, there are some seriously good shots in this challenge. I don't think I've ever given out so many 7's, 8's and 9's before. Damn all you gorgeous and ridiculously talented people, lol!
I've gotten some really great comments & suggestions on my photo as well - especially from JRalston - thanks for the advice! I've been putting all the suggestions to use on a new version of my self portrait & I think it's definitely improved with your guys' help.
This website is such a great learning tool... I love DPC. |

I'm getting a lot of comments about the slight blurriness of my photo too, and I'm realizing that they're totally right... my photo would've been much improved if it were sharper. The crisper photos in this challenge seem much more honest and real to me. Maybe if you wanted to appear slightly blurred for artistic reasons you could've made it more obvious that you were doing it intentionally, i.e. as with a motion blur? |

Just ended my voting, and commenting.
I have to say that there are quite a few imaginative images.
I did not enter this challenge, thank God.
Good luck to all.

Unfortunately, DPC'ers thrive on tack sharp photos, even if you are trying to display a mood using a less sharp effect. Fact is, most will look at every entry with a magnifying glass to find the slightest flaw, especially if they really like it (IMO that is). I myself love deep sepia with a darkened overall tonal feel and look. They don't fly well most of the time, but hey, that is just my style and what I love to do. Depending on the challenge, I rarely veer away from what I love to shoot and how I like to process it, no matter the comments.
On my own entry for this challenge I found my monitor was not calibrated correctly before entering. However, that only effected the votes of three individuals out of the 15 comments I did get (just going by those comments mind you). Not bad for bad calibration. However, even now that it is calibrated and I look at the image, the "offness" is SO minute that it was hardly worth such harsh comments.
The problem, if you will, that really lies in challenges and trying to meet everyone's appeal is to realize that others can't read your mind. They don't know that your own life is somewhat blurred or out of whack, and so they can't relate to an image that states that within the processing you did without an explaination as to why you used such a technique. You have to show it in other ways, and sometimes that isn't easy to do.
This isn't like a museum where you go in and see a painting that is nothing but blotches of color splattered on a canvas and hear someone say "Wow, what a powerful image. I look at that and I see the epidomy of mankinds sadness wrapped in the arms of a rainbow's comfort.".....LOL. Here? It is photographs and not paintings, and some are so wrapped up in technical and processing perfection they can't see past their own veiwfinders. They forget that the same artistic intentions were that of the photographer, just as with the painting - since we are all artists just using a different technique.
I too find it really to be a shame, but here you not only have to get your artistic intentions across but do so by being technically crisp and perfect. It's not the kindest game in the world for the soul, but it is still fun to try.
I wouldn't take many comments with any seriousness though. I rarely do. :) And of course, you can always explain your actual intentions in your shots comments after challenge. In the meantime, just enter what you love and what your intentions are for your shot, and let the chips fall.
Hope you didn't mind my advice :)

I'm right with you. My image is quite emotive as well, yet it's getting what I like to call the "tech-attack". LOL....But, like you said, it's all good - just a game. My husband and I were discussing this whole thing this week, and laughing over quite a bit of it. He said that it is best on a site like this to not see a ribbon for the first 7 years. LOL...Then when you finally get one it will mean just a little bit more...LOL. Ribbons aside, art is art, and stay true to who you are. Not everyone will like it. We are both sad facts of that reality. :) |

Helga, welcome to DPC!
15 comments, almost 6 score, 2 favourites and so on is really quite good for the site. It will not get you a ribbon, but it's very good. |

Same here. I got 10 comments of which about 7 saw what I intended to show, 3 commentors didn't get the message, same as many voters, because I'm way below average (4.35)but I really don't mind. I simply refuse to please the crowd. One might make a technically perfect photo, but if the composition sucks, it still is a bad picture, if you know what I mean.
The fun for me in participating lays in the challenge itself, not at all in the score I'm getting.
