Well then you and I are in a race Deb - 5.5+ for my dpc cinema - blahhh. I have one in night shot scoring just over 6.0. Also an entry for Environ Portrait and Self Portrait. I am going to pass on still life and lens cap. I think my portraits will do well, but then I thought my qtips would stink and my cinema would do great. I am so confused.

I don't know anyone well enough to subject them to portraiture, so no environ portrait from me, and there ain't no way I'm doing a self portrait. Oh, sure, I have a tripod and a remote, but I've yet to figure how people get themselves in focus for self-portraits.

Maybe I should submit a picture of my cats as a self-portrait... think that would do well? :-)

Just kidding!

Well, I got my first ribbon! A brown... :(

Please no-one feel obliged to comment on my Night Shot after Tues night rollover, I went out and forgot to put Noise Reduction on for the long exposures, so all but the last two photos were unuseable. I entered to see how it would do, but regretted it. I have no emotional attachment -it just is, doesnt do anything for me...comments I have so far are enough.

Skip me and put an extra couple of minutes into someone else's critique :)

@kdsprog - sorry about the brown, happens to the best of 'em

I really don't feel bad about it. I knew I shouldn't have submitted it. I had just gotten my circular polarizer and was out shooting in the woods, when I came to the little pond and the fish were all at the edges it looked like they were gasping for breath. I just thought it was cool to be able to take a picture through water of the fish. The water really was gross though. And the picture actually was much worse before editing.

edit to add: would this have done any better with that title? Probably not...

Based on some comments from a couple of you, I tried re-editing my shot with a stronger S-curve. I think I'm just too timid in my editing sometimes. Did I get it a bit closer this time? I'll also tag on a couple of other shots from the Mission - it really is an interesting place to visit.

Re-edited challenge entry:

Outtakes:

Finally, DanSig - I hope you don't mind, but I "borrowed" yours, converted to B&W using desat, applied a bit of an S-curve, then cropped. Here's what I ended up with:

They all look excellent. What is this S curve? I've heard it mentioned but I don't know what it means.
05/17/2006 09:23:15 PM · #158
I would guess it refers to the Curves adjustment (in Photoshop). An slight "S" shape can often have a beneficial effect on a photo.
I recently learned (at a Photoshop conference) that it's best to avoid having horizontal sections and downhills sections (left to right).

Kelli - I just discovered it recently myself. In PS, adjustments (or adjustment layers) pick Curves. I play with the intersection points in the upper right quarter, the middle, the lower left quarter. I set the middle by clicking on it once, then select the upper right quarter point and slide it up a bit, select the lower left quarter and slide it down a bit. Also saw someone mention that if you do that in layers, you can then soften the effect by changing the percentage of the layer itself. Don't know if any of that made sense or not! :-)

Here's your catfish - I did an autolevels (which really brought out some color), then applied an "S" curve.
05/17/2006 09:39:30 PM · #161
cool! I'll have to give this a try.

If you want to increase contrast in a certain part of your photo, in Curves, click and drag across the area you want to adjust. Watch how an open circle moves around on the curve, which indicates the range of the area you want to adjust. Click at both ends of that range and make the curve more vertical to increase contrast for that tonal range, and more horizontal for less.
It's also best to use the arrow keys to move the points on the curve up and down so that you don't move sideways, which is hard to keep from happening with a mouse.
(BTW, to take away a point on the curve, just drag it off the curves window.)

I think I have commented on everyone's submission. Sorry it took a couple of days to get to this...I've been working late hours this week.
05/18/2006 08:02:21 AM · #164
I just finished 23 comments in 1 hour...

so I've commented on all entries so far...

OK guys - I have been slacking on my posts for everyone - I plan on getting you all caught up tomorrow night before rollover. Crazy week it has been and a crazy weekend to finish it all off.

I havn't been as active as most of you entering challenges, but I have pictures in selfportrait and environmental portrait. so you'll have something to comment on :)

just a note for nards656 -- his work has been moving his office from one end of town to the other (simple story version), so he has virtually been off line all week. He should be up and running next week and able to jump back in.

As far as entering challenges, I'll try to light a fire under him about that. (and then take a picture of it for the heat challenge)>
05/20/2006 01:20:27 PM · #168
Heh! Thanks - was wondering what he'd been up to!

And as far as entering challenges, I've got nada, nothing, zip, zero for the member challenge and the open challenges coming up. Sure it's hot here - 100s yesterday - but I've yet to figure out how to depict that (other than a shot of the thermometer readout in my car, which strikes me as very, very dull.)

O.K. I'm in with "heat" (with another of my crazy ideas). You'll recognize it as the one that didn't quite work and was technically flawed. (sound familiar?)
05/22/2006 12:27:49 AM · #170
I'm in with "Heat", too. You'll recognize it as the one that's meant to be humorous. :-)

05/22/2006 05:24:48 AM · #171
I've got one in Still-life sitting at a 6.xx (wooooo!) and one in Heat sitting at a 4.xx. hehe. oops

Hello, gang. I must sincerely apologize for my total lack of presence over the past two weeks. I've been having serious aggravations of various sorts that have totally stolen all my time; I've probably made less than 20 pictures in a three week period. As well, for various reasons, I've not been able to spend very much time online AT ALL, and that is just the way it has been.

I hope to be able to resume my activities here in our little club next week, but I do ask your forgiveness and tolerance for my absence.

Thanks!

Hey guys -
We are headed out of town for the week and will have limited computer access. I will ctach up on all critiques next Monday when we return. I think I am only behind on the SP challenge at the moment. Wish us luck for some good new challenges this week and that our new environment will give us some ribbon winning opportunities. Cya all later.

I think I'm up to date on all comments, I had a picture in self portrait, and I have one in success that might ribbon 6.8 and rising..., and I have one in architecture.

if I forgot to comment on anyone then just let me know, or I will get to it when the next results are in...
