I ordered a lens from these guys (Abe's of Maine) that was listed as 'in stock'. When they failed sending shipping info for a couple days I called them, but it took another day to squeeze out a definitive answer confirming that the item is on back order. See the rest of the story in the email I just sent to them:

I placed this order # ******* on 05/04/2006 for a Nikon 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF Zoom Lens (USA).
My credit card was charged on the 10th ($308.89 with shipping).
On the 11th this month you confirmed that the item was back ordered. I cancelled the order same day. A manager of Abe's of Maine named K took the cancellation and promised the money would be back on my credit card in 3 business days. On Tuesday the 16th I talked to K again: he expressed surprise that the money was still not charged back on my card; he reconfirmed the card number and assured me of immediate action. Now 4 business days have already passed and the money is still not back on my account.

If the money is not back on my account by the end of this week I will be left with no choice but to turn to a legal representative.
Hope, your immediate attention/action in this issue will make this step unnecessary.

So, Beware of Abe's of Maine!

They used to be a reputable business many years ago. Shame to hear.
Is it possible that the credit may have been applied by abe's and the hold up may be due to processing on the credit card companys end? I know normally the first step would be to contact your card company and refute the charges when the bill comes due, but there is something like a thirty day grace period that must pass before they can act. This might be a more prudent first step (as it is free) before getting an expensive lawyer for the matter over a $300 purchase.

I won't do business with Adorama for the same trouble you mentioned. (About them listing items in stock, and then several days later finding out they are backordered and the had not notified me)

That really sucks about the credit card. Hopefully it will be refunded before you have to start paying interest on it..LOL!
