I know Joey! :)

Before you all jump on me I AM NOT IMPLYING THAT JOEY WILL NOT SEND YOU THE VIDEO...in fact, I'm sure you'll get it and it will be worth every penny. But...Rex is not different as far as if this may be a scam or "you don't think he will buy the camera for the kid".
The only solution would be to not allow solicitations on the site.

I in no way questioned Rex's past helpfulness *or* in anyway suggested it was a scam by any means.
However, I don't care who it is, but I find it very wrong for DPC to start becoming a "ask everyone for money whenever you feel like being generous" situation, and I will speak out against it every time I see it. *I* feel, that if you wish to help someone out, you should make sure you can help them out, instead of opening to doors to everyone and their dog requesting donations from people for anything they want.
No, that's not what Rex was doing, and yah, he's got a history of helping people out, but that doesn't mean that *this* kind of outright solicitation for money is any better in my eyes.
Period.
I wasn't attacking Rex, and I wasn't attacking his integrity. I was attacking the method used, which I feel is in poor taste.
You can disagree all you like. |

I do, whole heartedly. If you don't like it, ignore it and move on. I am more offended by you pushing your views than someone asking for cash to help someone else out. This is especially the case with someone like Rex, with a long history of helping by donating *his* money every chance he gets. He doesn't deserve you blasting him with your views of poor taste. Let it go, ginore it, and move on. That's the easiest think to do. That way, those who feel the desire to help someone out can, and thoe who don't, won't. This is my opinion. |

Sure, that's fine, I can ignore it. For now.
Mark my words though, if it's allowed to continue, people are going to start to A) Expect it.
and B) The real scammers will begin to latch on.
But that's for other people to worry about.
Me? I'm ignoring it. |

Start the thread...maybe you will get a new lens...maybe you won't...like I said before...we're either going to allow solicitations on this site or we are not going to allow them.
We have a few going on right now...Joey L and his instruction video and Rex's cam for a girl donation thread. I really don't see a problem with threads asking for money, however, the more we do the more "unnoticed" they will become.
Well anyway, I bought an 18-200 mm VR two weeks ago. I sold two lenses to help pay for it. I'm still $90.00 short. My credit card payment is due at the end of this month. Does anyone want to help a working stiff out and help me cover this $90? I promise to take good pictures with it and if I don't ribbon in a challenge with it within 6 months of the first donation, I'll pay the money back!

Just to stay on track here, this is not some cool gadget to add to someones arsenal of camera equipment. It's just a litte point & shoot for a child. Cameras are a luxury when you think about it and if a child is showing an interest in a positive hobby then I am all for helping that hobby flourish if I have the means. I just consider myself lucky to have what I have and if I can help someone out who might be struggling a little with the "Extras" in life for their children then that just makes be feel good that I could help.
I do agree that charity posts should stay to a minimum (I'm definitely not paying for someone's new lens!) :-), but in an instance like this I have no problem helping out and am glad it was brought to my attention.

I don't really see an issue with anyone's choices here. I initially opted not to donate because I choose not to send money for vague purposes like "child of someone I know" without knowing the details and I honestly didn't see how other people donating their money was a way for Rex to "pay back for being so fortunate to be able to afford some luxury items." I've since found out the intended recipient and still opt not to donate because I don't see an additional camera in a household with a dslr and as many lenses as I own to be a need which requires the charity of others. That's just my opinion. I'm stingy with my money and careful about what I do with it, especially online. If you all feel like it's a great cause, you're certainly welcome to do as you please. I'm sure it will be appreciated. |

I think it is stupid of you to post such a thing.
Either way I got enough money to help the person out so to those of you that donated then a big fat "Thank you"

Why is it stupid? I didn't have any issue with your request and I'm glad you got the camera. I'm also glad Joey is making money. I feel that if one request to donate money is allowed then ANY request should be allowed.

Congrats on getting the money for the camera, Rex. After reading the thread, I was going to drop some cash in the bucket, but since you got what you needed, I spent it on popcorn instead.
For the record, I really would have donated, but I respect the concerns and opinions of others who disagree with this type of request.

Your method came off as mocking and disrespectful. If you want to solicit donations for your personal new lens fund, then go ahead, but do it on your own thread instead of hijacking someone else's.
