Hi
I was wondering what's the good to allow to vote on only 20% of the submissions? Isn't this unfair for those that don't receive a vote from a 20%-only voter?
I really don't understand the use of that 20%. Either vote on all or note a t all. I think that this allows "phoney" voters to vote only on few to get to vote on their friend's submission.
Personally I'm getting only very good comments on my submission but then again my score is only 6.0. Something doesn't work.

Many people simply dont have the time to vote on all of the images, but want to vote on some. It's also there to PREVENT votes being counted from people who only vote on a few images. Most of the open challanges have had 200+ submissions recently. For your votes to be counted you have to vote on at least 40 images. If you look over the photo for awhile, leave comments, or have a slow connection, that can take awhile.
Also, the people that comment give you higher marks than those that just vote. 6.0 is a pretty good score here anyway. The winning photos usually have scores in the low-mid 7's. |

I understand but what is the impact of those 20% votes? Isn't it unfair that a picture receive more (good or bad) votes than another? It must have an impact on the overall result. My thought.

since everyone sees the pictures in a random order, those "20%" will be randomly scattered everywhere.. say, if 10 people only give 20% of votes, thats 200 votes, but they'll be randomly scattered over the 200 participants.. sure some will get maybe 2-3, and some will get none, but thats randomness for ya...

That's assuming people who vote less than all images ARE voting on the first X images as they are displayed (which wouldnt skew results) rather than picking and choosing which images to vote from the thumbnails (which would skew the voting).
Not that I've entered much but I just don't let this kind of thing worry me. What will be will be.

Mathematically, it makes no difference, as all the non-voted on shots effectively get an 'average' score - at least the average of their other votes.
If someone were to vote on only 20% of shots and give all those shots 10, then things would be skewed a little - but over about 200 votes, a coupleof random tens make very little difference.
Provided it's honestly given, even only voting on one shot makes no difference either.
Personally, I try to vote on every shot in a challenge - or not vote at all - but I tend to work on a favourite of the week basis rather than anything more formulaic: also, I have only a dial-up connection, and trying to vote on 400 shots (roughly, in all three challenges) would be impossible.

ONLY a 6.0? I consider anything above 5 to be a decent score not worth complaining over. As for the comments, they usually are much more positive than the score would suggest. It might have something to do with the fact that the photographer is going to know who left the comment, but I think that people just like to comment on what they respond to. That's why the winning shots usually have a lot more comments than the rest.
Voting on all the shots can be a big job for those of us on modem, and I think the 20% minimum is a good rule. |

Nathalie: about the comments, it is pretty obvious to me that people who take the time to leave a comment tend to do this more when they like the picture. For example I never leave a comment when I find a picture totally awful. Do you?
This explains why comments tend to be good...
And 6 seems to be a good score here... |

I actually try to leave comments on most of the photos that I score even if I give them a low score (but I never get through all of the entries). I've left constructive comments on shots that I've scored '1'. My comments usually tell what I liked or disliked about the photo and its composition, colors, focus or whatever else and how I think it could be improved or changed. I'm no photography expert but I think that any comments I can give that are constructive will help the photographer to improve an aspect of their shooting. Plus, I never give out stupid little comments that just bash a photo. If you aren't going to say something constructive, just click your score and don't say anything at all. |
