I have a friend that has a daughter that really enjoys photography. They can't afford to get her a camera and I would like to buy a nice camera for her to start with perhaps a Canon Powershot S1 IS. It looks like the going price is around $200. So I am asking for donations of any amount. Lots of you know I started a charity a few months back but had to close it down with the new schedule from work. So this is my way of paying back for being so fortunate to be able to afford some luxury items myself. But I can't do it by myself. So if you want to donate then just paypal the money to jstantonjr "at" adelphia "dot" net
100% is going to this camera and I will purchase it within a week or so so please help.
Edit to add:If you are interested the person is a member here. It was going to be a surprise but now that everyone has complained she will know.

I think your intentions are nobel, rex, but its a little difficult to just 'email' money to an account without really knowing who or what the money will be for. This is not to question the information you've given, but we are all strangers to each other, and its easy to be scammed on the internet.

I bought my niece a nice digi-cam for her birthday.. it was about $200. I saved up for it for a couple of months, despite the fact that I could hardly afford to.
I personally find it a little insulting that you'd ask people to help you when you're sitting there with a large amount of camera gear that you could likely sell off if you really wanted to help this kid out that bad.
DPC isn't "charity central", and requests like this don't help. |

I agree, you have 3 cameras I'd recommend donating one of them to him.

Do you people realize how much I have donated to others here?
I find it insulting that you want me to sell a camera my wife uses and one my kids use for this.
And to even think that I am scamming.
Forget about it I will buy it myself.

I personally wonder what in hell has happened to DPC ..
Rex has donated LOTS over the years... given out lots of memberships.. and helped when asked to .. so when he asks you to help ... you attack him... inthe past we all helped out when some kid needed a camera... happily and without a blink of our eyes...
I know money's REALLY tight for me right now ... but when i get a 20.. i'll send it to Rex...to help out...
Thanks people...

Hey Rex,
I feel for you, but I do have to agree with Frisca that it is hard to know where you money is going when you send it over the internet. I am not questioning your integrity, as I personally do believe you have good intentions. If you were a new member to DPC that had signed up yesterday and had never entered a challenge and then you posted this, I would be very suspicious. But you have been a member for a while and are obviously sincere so I guess I am writing this to say that I don't think people should be questioning your good will.

Not to drag in anyone else but many of you have or said you will donate to Joey's account. He is sending you a DVD of editing secrets in exchange for $25.00. You all don't "really" know Joey either or if you'll ever get the CD BUT many have sent in the bucks.
Before you all jump on me I AM NOT IMPLYING THAT JOEY WILL NOT SEND YOU THE VIDEO...in fact, I'm sure you'll get it and it will be worth every penny. But...Rex is not different as far as if this may be a scam or "you don't think he will buy the camera for the kid".
The only solution would be to not allow solicitations on the site.

Since you quoted me, I will reply: I did not for a moment question Rex or what he'd do with the money. I was more concered about the account the money was going to (didn't realize it was Rex's) and whether this was cause truly worthy since we did not have very much information about the person in need. I like to know who it is my money is going to support before I part with it.

Hey Rex (James), is there a way to send to paypal if you don't have an account? Sorry, I never use paypal so I don't know the logistics of it. If I have to I'll sign up ... just thought I'd ask. I can't send much, but I'm sure every little bit will help. Kids deserve all the encouragment they can get to help stay on the right path in life. :-)
I know people can be leary about internet scams and people asking for money but Rex has done a lot for the DPC community (I'm not sure how many memberships he's donated exactly, but I know it's been at least a few). Being that I know him personally, I can attest that his heart is definitely in the right place here.
So if you feel so inclined, don't worry about the legitimacy of this claim. Just feel good about doing something nice for a child. :-)

I was torn, but donated money anyway. It is really tough to give hard-earned, good money to help buy something from CANON!!! Nice start, now you people give MORE, please.

My camera (Nikon Coolpix 5400) is actually a pretty good high quality beginner camera, goes for about $200 these days. Both easy menu filters and more advanced functions, and you can buy lens kits on eBay for about $100. I also got an extra battery for it on eBay for about $5. I know nothing about what might be equivalent in a Canon.
