My husband has a photo in the lens cap challenge. I really like it and feel it deserves a good score. In the past 3 challenges I have simply not voted on the one he was in. I'd like to vote on this challenge, but am unsure to whether I should vote on his shot or not.
What do you think? |

Nothing wrong with giving it your honest evaluation. |

Because it could be seen as rigging the votes?? It gives him an unfair advantage? I don't know, thats why I'm asking for oppinions. |

Not really. If it's an honest vote then that should be ok. In the end, it's you who determines the vote which should be based on merit and not bias ;) |

That´s the beauty of anonymous voting, you can give him a fair vote and he´ll never know :) |

I don't feel you give him an unfair advantage if you give the photo an honest evaluation like GeneralIE already said.

Put on a blindfold while you're voting. That way you won't know which one is his. |

If you feel you may be biased on your vote for him (perfectly understandable, IMO), you could just pass on voting on his particular shot. Just hit the little arrows at the end of the scale. Then you don't have to worry about it at all, and can still vote 99% of the challenge :-) |

On those few occasions when my husband has entered a challenge I've voted on I have voted for his image the same as anyone else's and assessed it honestly as I would anyone else's.
Sometimes I have known it was his in advance and sometimes I haven't - ironically when I've given him the better scores has been when I have not known it's his until afterwards!
In the same way, if I recognise an image as being by any particular photographer (because of subject or whatever) whether they are a friend or someone I don't know, I just vote it on how I see it. No extra points and no harsher voting either.

well, also, even if you give him a 10, that's one vote out of a few hundred, not that much of a rigging, so don't feel guilty... besides you sound pretty honest anyway... just don't hurt his feelings.. :) |

True in theory but, god forbid, should you have negative things to say, you'll sound like you are putting them down. I think anyway.

I would feel terribly guilty giving him say a 4 or whatever if thats wht I thought the picture deserved. But that's just me.

Your situation is problematical. It would be unfair to other competitors if you vote on your hubby's entries only when you "really like it and feel it deserves a good score", but skip voting on other challenges (or just skip his shot) when you think his entry is not quite so good. And, of course, anonymity is gone but nothing can be done about that. I would reccommend that you adopt a policy of trying to vote on either all or none of the challenges he enters. It goes without saying that you should try to vote on all the entries in any challenge you vote on. It may not be humanly possible in the absolute sense but we should give you the benefit of the doubt that you will score his shots honestly.

If you feel it's a good shot, give him the 10. That's what voting is for. Giving scores based on our impressions. Think about it this way. If you had no idea whose picture it belonged to, what would you give it? In the grand scheme of things, your one vote on his picture is not going to make much of a difference.

Would you? I must admit, I wouldn't at all - he's looking for honest evaluation from complete strangers, he can certainly handle honest evaluation from his wife! It might be different if I found myself thinking ALL his work was weak - then it might come across as something other than an objective assessment - but since I often really like some of his work too, letting him know when I don't wouldn't make me feel guilty at all!

Even if you give him a good vote, look at it as ballancing out the trolls. |

It's good to have allies on this site.
I know there are a few members with friends, family, and bribed government officials on this site to help them get those desired blue ribbons.
HELL, look at all the members from Iceland. It's an island for
God sake. Most of it volcanic, and covered in ice. You can't tell me that they don't all know each other.

It may be helpful to give an unbiased vote, by just running into his in the natural scheme of things. Like to, you know see how his weighs against all others.

Thanks for all the replies. Not sure what I will do. Probably vote on all the rest then see how I'm feeling about it. Cheers :) |
