Another idea is Caribou, which is a ghost town up around Nederland - and Nederland itself is a funky little town to visit and a great place for lunch. Caribou only has three visible structures remaining and the rest of the meadow is just wildflowers - generally so many that the whole mountainside audibly hums with the bees. I try to make it up there a couple times a year.

What about this - who is within Happy Hour distance of Denver? Why don't we meet up for drinks one night soon and have an actual discussion?

Sorry, I didn't take the time to see if anyone has thrown out Mt. Evans yet. Wide open vistas, mountain lakes, mountain goats, only catch is $10 a vehicle last time I checked. Guenella is a great place also. Most anywhere would be fun, but when narrowing down the choices just keep us lowrider car people in mind.

Thanks Cutter for taking the lead, and keeping this going.

Other places to consider; Royal Gorge, Air Force Academy, Downtown Denver, and Indian Peaks

I like the happy hour idea. Meet up and make some plans.

Mmmmm... more like spoiled. My husband likes toys and I've benefitted nicely from his good taste in cars and computers. Both of which I know little to nothing about. My only requirement for a car was it has to have heated seats!

We're working on the successful part!

I'm going to throw a date out and see how it works with everyone. How about June 24th "Saturday"

Since I'm new to the area, a lot of the locations mentioned I'm not familiar with. The ghost town and wild flowers sound like great places.

Ouch, I'm out! Street Rod Nationals that weekend...I'm hopelessly addicted.

Where is Nederland?

I play in golf tournaments and might be in a tournament that weekend (if I qualify). But I will know that after my qualifier which is June 7th. So since I like to think I am good enough to qualify, I will say I probably can't go the weekend of the 24th.

Air Force Academy, Downtown Denver, Indian Peaks

I have wanted to visit the Air Force Academy nice and early for a long time now. Sounds like one idea. I live downtown, so could always lead everyone around quite nicely, so always up for that one anytime. Indian Peaks? Where is that?

Mt. Evans

I love driving up to Mt. Evans and photographing that whole area. Actually when you stop by Summit Lake and walk to the other side, you can see down into a valley that is hikeable as well, so says the rangers. I believe there are three lakes down in the valley called the "chicago lakes" maybe..I am not sure on that one. But that sounds like a good one too.

Okay were off to a bad start! lets bump it up a weekend. How about July 1st 'Saturday"
05/16/2006 11:19:54 PM · #34
Nederland and Indian Peaks pretty much the same area. Indian Peaks is just south of Rocky Mountain National Park. And Nederland just east of there.

I can tell you June 17th (saturday) should definitely work for me. That is still one month away....

Both of those dates would probably work for me. Keep in mind the 1st is a holiday weekend it'll be crowded in the mountains, on the other hand it may be good for those who live father away that want to join in.

I'm in as well, and can make a suggestion - indian paint mines outside of Calhan
There's some neat stuff out there and I haven't been in years.

Ahh yeah, the Paint Mines are neat, though really out of the way.
My photo essay from March is here:

I have a commitment on June 2nd - shooting Girl Scouts at the zoo.

I'm interested, but just bought a house and so time is limited, it would depend on what weekend was settled on. I'll keep an eye out on this thread and will chime in when it's closer. :)

It's a shame it's going to be that far from now. We're most likely going up to Denver this weekend, it would be cool if it coincided with the GTG.

Oh well, maybe we can organize a '4 corners area' shoot since I think there's at least 5 DPC members including myself within about 40 miles.

Oh please pick a Sunday so I can go too!

Mt Evans is beautiful! I went up there last year on July 8th 2005. It was so beautiful I never made it all the way to the top. The pictures below are from the Summit Lake area. The valley pesksty mentioned and the Chicago lakes area are shown below. It did look very accessible, although it was raining when I went, and I didn't want to venture too far from shelter.
Not sure when exactly that the spring flowers start to bloom up there. But it might be a little early in the season.

June 17th or July first I am cleared...from work that is...:)
The 17th I would have my 4 year old photo assistant...but that is not a problem.

I'm good with June 17th as well.

June 17th seems to be picking up steam....any others with opinions on this date??
05/18/2006 01:48:28 PM · #46
Pretty sure I could make it the 17th or 18th.

June 17th is good for me.

17th works for me, too.
05/23/2006 03:43:54 PM · #50
June 17th seems to be the date, now for where and what time? Would it be too presumptuous of me to narrow the list down to Rocky Mountain National Park, Golden Gate Park, Roxborough State Park and Mount Evans? Anybody want to advance one of these specific locations?
