Hey all, i really could use a few opinions,
today i got this email
hi troy,
I came across your website and wanted to know how to aquire a couple of your
photos.
I'm interested in "3 of 9" and "4 of 9" in the Newport to Ensenada Yacht
Race gallery.
If it's possible, I'd like to get a digital copy of both photos for my
personal use/enjoyment (not for reprint or publication).
I think they'd make for a great desktop background!
Please let me know if and how to get a copy from you.
thanks,
dan
and i looked up his email on google and he works for some enviromental company, so to me, he may be looking for the photos for a project or something like that,
he does say for his personal enjoyment but you cant trust anyone these days.
whats your take

If it were me I'd send him a couple over, I'm an amateur fotog so it would not be as if I was losing anything. imho its good of him to ask, just dont send a whopping big file over to him.

I've done this several times. Ask him what size his desktop is and size them up. It will leave a good impression, and if his company ever needs some photos you never know.

I would charge him the price for a 4x6 print since he could just buy one and scan it anyway. I would reduce the file size to where it could work for the desktop but not full resolution. |

I am glad i didnt offer him a digital download of the picture file,
i send him an email and told him that i only offer either prints of the photographs or the actual rights to the photgraph and that its really expensive,
he wrote back and spilled the beans, its actually his boat and his family and friends that were in the race and he wants to now buy prints for his family and friends,
yee haaa, my first prints sold from a actuall visitor to my site

Just a word of warning... if you can see it on your screen, it can be captured. The "right click disabled" feature won't stop anyone but the casual downloader.
For example, on your site (same site I use), if you view your page with Firefox and the click Tools | Page Info and select Media, you can then save a copy of *any* image on the screen.
So if you're worried about people downloading your pictures, then either watermark them, or don't display larger sizes.
Most of my "for sale" images are for paying customers so I don't watermark and I do display large images. (just so you know that I'm not being hypocritcal by violating my own advice, rather, I'm only offering up a word of warning for those that might not know) |

For the freebies? Nothing. :D
One led to a £200 follow up, and there\'s an outside chance of another leading to a pitlane pass for a major event this summer. Others just result in a grateful driver who has a good photo of himself to show off.
I value the last one most.
Glad you got your sale though. Hopefully many more to follow!
