So, I actually have someone wanting to buy one of my pictures and I need to email the hi-res file to them.

No problem.

I dig back through my "archives" (the pic is from 2002) and find the disc it is on. (If it matters, the CD was probably burned mid-2003).

Ah, there is the folder. So I click on it, only to be told "An error has occurred in the folder."

I don't like this.

Any thoughts as to why? how?
Can the files be retrieved?
Is it hopelessly lost?

Of the 13 "folders" on the CD, 9 of them open fine. But four of them don't.

Hope you have another copy. :(

Once a disk is unreadable, there is not much can be done to make it readable again. (This is of course assuming you have covered the basics of cleaning and such.) Might try a few different drives (preferably the one it was written with) and freezing the disk for a few seconds in a zip-lock bag ... but don't get your hopes up. Sorry.

Thats odd.. Try copying the files into your computer and opening them.

Did you try right click and opening them? Try a tright click and a search for a file that may be in the folder. Or try just right click and explore.

Do you have the ability to try it in a different computer?
Although I dont think it's your computer or CD's fault that it doesnt
work, as other folders open.

Im not sure what the problem is, the folder may have become corrupt.

Eitherway, put the folder in your computer and from there you can more easily try running some retreive software or something (try googling for something like "Folder Recovery Software" or "Folder Fixing Software"

Sry cant be more help, just throwin out ideas.

Congratulations! Now is the time to copy it all back to a hard drive, and then to a new CD and/or DVD : )

Glad to see it worked on the other drive. :)

When making new backups of the files on that disk (and any others from the same batch of disks), you might want to look into adding PAR recovery records to help prevent problems like this.

As to why it happened -- it could be the disk, the drive or the operating system. No need to remake backups if it is the drive or operating system -- although the PAR recovery records would still be an option for added security.
