five years ago, then 41-year-old carol woosley's husband hassel suffered a massive heart attack. at that time, the doctors told her she should make plans to take care of herself in terms of replacing his income. she quit her job as a school cafeteria worker and enrolled in a nursing program. today, after she received her nursing degree, she got a big bear-hug from hassel--made especially sweet because they didn't expect him to live to see her graduate.
this just goes to show, anybody can accomplish just about anything, if they are motivated and committed. this woman has gone from making just above a living wage to where she will be working as a professional nurse. this is absolutely awesome. i am so stoked to have been able to shoot this. all i can say now is, "WHOO-HOO, Carol Woosley!!! you go girl! you are it!"

The human spirit is an amazing thing, and stories like this so often slip through the cracks to make room for shock value news and suffering.
Thanks for sharing this Skip. |

absolutely! this is such a simple thing to pass by and say, 'oh, that's nice,' when in reality, this is really one of those stories of inspiration and courage that show just what is possible. instead of throwing up her hands and giving in, she dug in and has triumphed. this is the type of story that makes me want to slap the snot out of anyone whining about how unfair life is. |

I think you can whine for a while, but you've got to pick up life soon after that and make something out of it.
sometimes it's nice to whine.

This is one of those stories that will stay with you Skip....you'll remember her face, her courage, her strength in years to come.

granted, there's nothing wrong with throwing a pity-party every once and a long while, but, like i've said before, "i don't think character is as much about what you see in the mirror as it's about what others see in you when the chips are down."
anyways, as to this photo
if i could edit it again, i might crop just a bit more off the top. i love the way you focus right in on her face, then follow the edge of the diploma to her hand, which leads you to the text which leads you to her other hand where you see her wedding band (notice no diamond) and the wrist corsage. i had an assignment, and had a number of other standard shots (her in the crowd, in line with other graduates, going across the stage, a family photo, etc), but i wasn't quite sure what i would get that would really bring the story home. when she came up and they embraced, i spontaneously started firing away. serendipity took over ;-) |
