Streaking!?!

I got the dust off my sensor but started seeing this, weird thing is that unlike dust it gets more visible the lower my apature goes, this was taken at 5.6

You can see this as a faint white streak against skies, etc, first thought was a hair or something but there is nothing visible on the lens, or sensor.

Please help, all ideas appriciated.

How did you clean your sensor?

Copperhill method, been using it for 3-4 years now with never a problem.

Yeah I don't understand it at all... there are no visible marks anywhere and it gets more visible the lower the apature which seems to be backwards of what I'm used to.

This might be on the internal elements of the lens, but in that case it should not be there if you change the lens. Otherwise definitely the sensor. Try cleaning it again and see if it goes away.

Tried cleaning again, no change.

Thought it might be a hair on the lens but after looking and looking have to admit that there is nothing (visible) there.

Man I really don't want to have to send this to Canon but I'm sure I'll have to... really sucks because it shows up in normal shots, my example was at f5.6

Sigh...

Can someone do me a favor and take a picture of the sky with their 30D @ f5.6 /ISO 100 and 800 for me to compare?

The streak I find in my pics is drastically worse at higher ISO's and so I'm even more confused...

Just read/replied in the other thread.

Definately try the no lens / paper test. One nice thing about Canon SLR's is that you don't need a lens on the camera to shoot.. in Av mode it will expose fine, and because nothing is in focus the only things you will see in the image should be big blobby effects of the light falling on the bit of paper.

If you get anything that looks defined like the streak or lines there is a fault with the camera, B&H will more than likely just replace it...

Cheers, Me.

Sorry MK and karmat for cluttering up the forums... thanks for the redirect.

Chris, thanks for the suggestion, just tried it. Without a the lens on there I don't see any (well, ok 1 or 2 specks) dust or the streak. I can't visibly see anything inside the lens, to explain the streak and I didn't think it was possible to see lens dust (can't see any of that in the lens either) in that way??? Am I mistaken? Wish I had another lens to try out now but I don't all I have right now is the Tamron. Now you got me all excited and hopefull that my camera isn't a lost cause...

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Lol...

Try going into a camera shop and asking to try a lense. Take a few shot and compare. I'd clean both the front and rear lens elements (in that order) taking shots to campare at each step along the way.

Update: Cleaned both front and rear elements of lens (they were covered with tiny dust) and sensor again, now both are shiny-clean and 50+ specks of dust still show up in shots about f14 and higher. Maybe they are coming from the lens, maybe under the AA filter as someone suggested elsewhere, I don't know and I don't know what to do about it.

The white streak I thought I had solved when I found and removed a 2 inch long hair (not mine, think its from factory) from the inside of the lens, but nope its still doing the white streak. Also removed several 1/2 to 1 inch long fibers (like what comes of a blanket) from the inside of the lens to no change. I didn't take the lens apart of course, all these were sticking out the back to one degree or another and I was able to pull them out with tweezers.

I'm at a loss and out of ideas...

humm...well inside dust in the lens can cause problems. IME it mostly just causes a soft focus though. My guess is it is possible an element in your lens has shifted and causing some sort of strange flare within the lens. At this point I would just go into a local camera shop and try out a couple of there lens's. Hell if that fixes the problem you may be buying a lens from them anyways ;-)
