Hello all,

I think you all can see what lenses i've got from my profile, so the question is: what more lenses i need?
I can't say that i am into one thing in photography, i would be general or everything day by day.

Lens 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM is in a list and will buy soon

Um. none.

You might want to actually concentrate on taking *photos* with those lenses sometime.

What are you, a museum? :)

Great selection of lenses there, I'd say you've taken some impressive shots with them. Do you have a portfolio up anywhere?

And what's wrong with your current selection of lenses that you're not happy with?

Whoever told you that you had cheap lenses must have been looking at the wrong profile.
05/12/2006 05:03:19 PM · #11
I will not say i am not happy, but maybe i did wrong choices about some of my lenses, and you people have more experiences, so i need good advices from you and i can buy good lens from now, i can't buy many lenses to try if some are good or not, and reviews sometimes confusing, for example Sigma lenses i feel it is not good enough or not as sharp high quality as Canon lenses. So if you were, people, in my place what lenses you are planning to buy? ofcourse with good budget say about $4000.

I'd say sell these:

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro
Sigma 12-24mm f/4-5.6 EX DG ASP. HSM
Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX DG ASP. HSM
Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II
Canon EF-S 18-55mm
Extension Tube EF 12II
Extension Tube EF 25II
Extender EF 2x II

keep these :
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Sigma 8mm EX DG Circular Fisheye
Flash Speedlite 580EX

buy the Canon 10-22 EF-S
buy the 70-200L f2.8 IS
and buy some studio lights and books about photography.

and maby upgrade your camera to 30D :)

Thank you very much, I appreciate you reply.
You are right, but i don't like to sell anything as i can't find people who can buy them in my area, and i am not planning to sell overseas. I will buy 70-200 sooner or later, but about 10-22mm i know it is great but still got some negatives like the distortion and not compatible with FF cameras which i will buy one someday soon. What do you think of 16-35 or 17-40mm?
05/12/2006 05:16:24 PM · #15
That was me that made mention of his lenses -- because he was telling everyone how he had $15,000 to spend on a camera body. I merely suggested a 20d or 30d and some quality lenses and get rid of some of the 'cheaper' non-pro ones he currently had instead of a 1dsmkII

Pretty much what DanSig said...

The key being picking up:
a 70-200 f/2.8
a 300 or 400 f/4
1.4 TC

Then, like I said look at a body if that's what you're looking for, but like I said, I wouldn't put all my money into one camera body ... put it in the lenses that will last multiple camera bodies.

I read reviews on the 16-35 and 17-40 before settling on the 17-40. According to the reviews, the 17-40 is better at the wide end (which is what I was buying the WA lens for) and the 16-35 is better at the long end. The 17-40 is also much cheaper.

See the review on Luminous Landscape for more information. Also, Fred Miranda may have reviews of these two lenses.

Most of the Rockies Weekend images in my portfolio were taken with the 17-40.

thank you for your reply
I will add this lens [17-40] to my list and check it later.
deapee, i agree with you. What if someone got a budget for both, the body and lenses, for sure lenses are so perfect, but also body camera will affect, most of people here got 2-5 cameras bodies, and i will upgrade one time only not always, and lenses for sure i will buy good one from now, just tell me good cameras or lenses and the rest up to me, money is not an issue all the time.

I did a mistake when i bought sigma lenses, just because i was travelling i didn't get any wide angle lens, so i bought all sigma as it is cheap and i didn't had much time before travel to buy one good wide angle lens, only canon and nikon and sigma are most available, and i asked of Canon that time and they said it was not available and they can order it for me, but i couldn't wait because i travelled very soon, that what happened so that i bought sigma cheap lenses. I know it will be better to sell but i can't get good money for them and i think i will not lose if i keep them as well. prime lenses from 300mm and above i don't needed this, 70-200 with my extender and 1.4 TC will be enough for a while till i decide to get one prime long focal length, just wide angle is much important for me. My dad can help me to buy some lenses so i can think of camera body in this case.

What do you think of this list of lense from high priority to low:

EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM
EF 16-35mm f2.8L USM
EF 17-40mm f4L USM
EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM
EF 300mm f2.8L IS USM
EF 400mm f2.8L IS USM

I didn't understand what you mean?
but for information, all these pics was taken by a lens 24-70mm f2.8L USM,
I couldn't use a tripod because there are lots of people and i was with my family, so i just holding my camera with lens and without tripod and shoot in slow shutter speed but with handhold as i can, and i let f to be by camera, i choose S to just control shutter speed.
Anyway, i want to go back there again and take another pics with better settings with tripod must

I think you fell into a common thing among all shooters. You start buying cheap glasses, then expensive glasses and have a hugh overlap and wonder if you need all of them. Then lens sharpness obscession starts, followed by control of Depth of focus. Lastly, with luck the migration from depth of focus to depth of feeling occurs where conveying feeling or emotion is the main and the most important aspect of your photo, not just technical stuff like lens sharpness.

Anyway, if you are not into any specific photography, I'd recommend a few zooms or a prime or so. Generally primes are not as versatile, especially long primes. If the environment and shooting distance is fixed, like in a studio, then primes can be very good. But if you like to go out and shoot outdoors in uncontrolled situations, a fast zoom allows for more compositional flexibility.

Now lets look at your list:
Canon EOS 350D: Get a Opteka Grip, it's cheap, helps support long lenses and holds an extra battery, doubling the no. of shots you can take.
Nikon CoolPix 8800: Unless you want a second digicam, sell it and just focus on mastering the dslr.

Lenses
1. Canon EF-S 18-55mm: Get rid of this, unless you really like/use this
Lens is poorly built, slow, soft wide open and at 55mm, and has too much CA
2. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II get rid of this unless you really like/use this. B/C this has only 5 blades, it's bokeh is of poor quality.
3. Canon EF 28-90mm f/4-5.6 II (you have the 24-70L, get rid of this)
4. Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM: unless you really like/use it, get rid of it. I personally don't like the excessive CA on this lens.
5. Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro: keep it if you use it.
6. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L THIS IS A KEEPER, keep it unless you hate it for some reason.
7. Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro: Sell unless you use/like it
8. Sigma 12-24mm: if you are happy with the optics, keep it otherwise consider another ultrawide.
9. Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX: Too much overlap with the 12-24 and 24-70.
10. Sigma 8mm EX DG Circular Fisheye: this is generally not a general use lens. However, it can be a very fun lens. Do you use it? if so keep it.
Extension Tube EF 12II (If you have a macro lens, you really don't need this much from your description)
Extension Tube EF 25II
Extender EF 2x II (extenders by Canon only work on the L lenses, plus it's not recommended for consumer grade lenses, especially 2X TC's)

Flash Speedlite 580EX (keeper)

Here would be my ideal list for general photography.
1. Canon 10-22/Tokina 12-24/Sig 10-20
All these are great for landscape/cityscape/crowd shots. The Sigma 12-24 is a bit softer than these till about f8. My personal pic is either the Canon or the Sig.
2. Keep the 24-70L with a Canon 10-22 and 24-70, the 2mm gap is nothing serious. Now you really don't need the Sigma 17-35 as that range is covered. The 24-70 can be used for walking around (general use) and for close range portraits.
3. Canon 70-200f2.8 or Sigma 70-200 f2.8:
These are big lenses but they are fast and sharp. You can use these for longer range portraits, performance type shots in the dark, sports (although a 2x TC maybe good here).
4. Lastly, keep a specialty lens or two. If you like the fish and/or macro, keep it. If you like really long distance shooting, consider a super tele photo prime or a zoom. Also, I see you did some night time shooting. Don't forget to buy a really sturdy tripod. You don't want a tripod that shakes or worse yet will tip over with all your stuff.

Good luck paring down your equip. list.
