Voting is a daunting task. I tried to leave comments that will help, but it's hard especially when there is 250+ images to vote/comment on.

It would be nice if there was some user classification such as Beginner, Amature, Professional. That way, I can vote in any catagory and not waist my comments on Professionals.

It might be hard to classify people into these groups, but they can either be self regulating (Pros wouldn't want to be classed with Amatures/Beginners nor would Beginners want to be in the same group as Pros). Or you can base people on their scores.

I would rather it be self regulated.

Has this idea been brought before? If it's a resource limit, I can help with the coding (I mainly work with Microsoft products, but I know some php).

Voting is sometimes a daunting task. I usually vote on all the images before I comment--and with a 250 entry challenge that may take 5 sittings so I don't get grumpy and jaded.

Once you've voted the images will be placed in categories by what you voted them. Some days I comment on all my high-scores...some days the ones in the middle.

Everyone likes and wants comments! Try not to feel intimidated by the idea that someone may have more experience than you. Just tell us what you see (this is a neat way to shoot a marshmallow...), how the image makes you feel (this image made me laugh...I could look at these colors all day....), or what gets in the way of your enjoyment (that stick in the foreground really detracts...) You don't have to critique them all, just comment how the image affects you, what you like or don't like about it.

I take it you are suggesting, for example, that each member "code" him/herself at a skill level: in your example, 1 for a pro, 2 for a skilled amateur, 3 for a "newbie" to the game. Then each entry would have, in addition to its title, the code number on it so you, the voter, know where they are coming from? And in this manner you'd be able to comment to others more constructively?

Unfortunately, this same system would allow the possibility of votes being affected by skill levels: "This was shot by a PRO? No way! 4!" versus the exact same image from a newbie: "Wow! A newbie did this? I'm impressed! 6!"

See what I mean?

I'd like to echo Bear_Music's thoughts on this and to add that the concept of 'pro' and 'non-pro' are just too vague to be of much use.

Many of the outstanding images on this site are created by 'non-pros' and any 'pro' would be proud to have captured them.

One of the great merits of this site for me is the 'level playing field' that the voting system generates.

I agree with you, Bear. I still like the idea of a checkbox when you enter to designate that you want/don't want comments. That could also be influencing, but at least we wouldn't be trying to "help" those that don't want it.

I now see what you mean. The only way to get around that is only Pros can vote for Pros and Newbies for Newbies. That's not a good solution either.

There's no easy to do it except for the member challenges. I haven't looked at the member challenges, but I'm assuming if you pay money for something (membership), you're more likely to be good at it.

I'm a photo n00b but I got a membership so I can get more challenges to practice in. Not all members are 1337 pros.

Nope, I can assure you that some of the members here are most definitely NOT pros, or even skilled amateurs. Well, at least one of them isn't. Paying the paltry fee for membership has the distinct advantage of providing an extra challenge per week to consider entering (and subsequently being humiliated from time to time) but more importantly comes with "portfolio space" which is really nice.
