Can someone please advise me what size/format should I save my origional photo on disc, for printers to make very large 1 metre x 1 meter or even larger for large canvas print copies.
I have saved it on file at 800x800 screen resolution, at saved at 150 or should it be larger.
My family is having my "Agave Blue" made into a very large canvas print, as he is the one who brought me my Canon camera. I need to save it on disc to send hime as they are having it enlarged at their cost. |

I just had a photo printer 30" by 20" and they recommended 3000x2000 pixels, but for the best quality they suggest 6000x4000 so I upsampled my shot, and its looks fantastic. I think 800x800 might be a bit small, could you make it any larger from the original? |

If you're going to be sending it off to a printer, your best bet is to give them the original file, then let them do the upsizing. I'm a little confused by '800x800 screen resolution' is. If thats in pixels thats way to small to make a large print out of. As for the DPI, its also probably best to probably leave that as it is. Even better might be to check with whoever will be doing the printing.
Check out this chart though, at //www.westcoastimaging.com/wci/page/info/FAQ/uploadfaq/printsize.html
which would be helpful if you wanted to do your own upsizing.

Here is the page from DPCPrints that explains their aspect ratios, maybe it will give some ideas too. Good luck.DPC prints aspect ratios

Thanks for that, and both of you have made me realize that I thought my saved size would be to small. I am going to go with the suggestion of sending the "origional" on disc, for the printers to choose what size is required.....
Any other suggestions welcomed..... |

Make sure when you are sending the original that you have all of your post processing done to it. IE Crop levels, ect. Just dont resize after your done. Save that file and then send it. That way you control how it looks, and they have a suitable size to work with.

Ooh and also depending on whether or not you have a good calibrated monitor you might want to have them do two smaller prints one with color correction and one without just to make sure that the finished product is going to come out like you envision it.

I've just had a quick google for you on canvas printing and they advise the DPI of your picture to be between 150 - 300.
So for a 1m square shot, you need it to be between 6000x6000 and 12000x12000 (which might be a bit excessive!) I'd try and upsample the original to 6000x6000 or 8000x8000. The resulting files may be pretty big!

The best practice, by far IMO, is to use your original file, re-edit to reproduce the look and feel you achieved on your uploaded file, and then upsample the image to achieve the pixel dimensions you need for the print size you want.
Upsampling can be done in PS or can be done using any of the many custom programs available for just this purpose. Many have been discussed here in previous threads. Do a forum search and maybe follow up some of the link provided there. I've done poster-size prints (24x36") from 6 megapixel files and the results are excellent. |
